Which Female Marvel Hero Should Get Her Own Movie First?
'Guardians of the Galaxy' writer Nicole Perlman admits to writing a 'Black Widow' treatment, but Marvel still doesn't have any plans for a female-led film.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought to life comic book characters in ways no one expected. It's easy to forget that before Iron Man, no one really cared about Iron Man besides comic fans. And with another hit movie on their hands — this time featuring a talking space raccoon and a sentient tree — fans are starting to wonder more than ever when a female Marvel hero will finally get her own movie.
Last week Nicole Perlman, who wrote Guardians of the Galaxy along with director James Gunn, admitted on Twitter that she had written a treatment for a Black Widow movie, but that movie isn't really going anywhere.
For his part, Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige has brushed off the fan outcry over Marvel's lack of a female lead, saying they're "not going to be swayed by the backlash." Last week he told ComicBookResources.com that he hoped Marvel would make a female-led film "sooner rather than later. But we find ourselves in the very strange position of managing more franchises than most people have."
A lot of this talk has centered around Black Widow thanks to the character's strong supporting role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and to Scarlett Johansson's burgeoning action star status. But she's not the only female hero in the MCU anymore, and next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron will introduce another heavy hitter. So which female Marvel character would you like to see get her own movie first?
#1. Black Widow
She's been in three Marvel movies, but Black Widow is still a mystery. A solo movie would give Marvel a chance to flesh out her character while confronting some of the secrets in her past.
After appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy, Zoe Saldana could star in a movie that brings together the Graces, Gamora's all-female team of galactic badasses (including Nebula) from the comics.
#3. Scarlet Witch
With Elizabeth Olsen playing the Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, perhaps her character will be strong enough to carry a movie, or at least a movie about Scarlet and her twin brother, Quicksilver.
#4. Captain Marvel
Joss Whedon has dropped hints that Captain Marvel, aka Ms. Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, might be in Avengers 2. If so, it would give the ultra-powerful character a launching pad for a story line that would likely cross into the Guardians of the Galaxy universe.
So which of these four do you think should lead her own movie first? Vote below.
