Hannelore Kraft, lead candidate of the German Social Democrats (SPD), speaks to supporters after the CDU won the North Rhine-Westphalia state election on May 14, 2017 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The election today, the third German state election this year, is being seen by analysts as an important indicator of the viability of SPD leader Martin Schulz, who will run against Chancellor Angela Merkel, a Christian Democrat (CDU), in federal elections in September. The CDU won the previous two state elections in Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein, despite an initial upsurge in support for Schulz after he announced he would run for chancellor in January.
