Diane Sawyer follows quickly on the heels of Charles Gibson's retirement to launch a new era as anchor of ABC News' flagship evening newscast on Monday. Sawyer's debut means women now hold two of the three top jobs on what have always been considered the most prestigious newscasts on broadcast TV. Three years ago, CBS' Katie Couric became the first woman to hold the job by herself. ABC has deliberately downplayed the transition on "World News." The show's top producer promised minor changes to accompany Sawyer, including the show's first update of on-air graphics in five years and a greater concentration on chat with ... Read Full Story

Considered one way, Charles Gibson 's career in TV news seems to be a model of stability: 34 years logged with one employer, ABC. There, he did his job well and rose to the top echelon of his profession, forming a firm bond with his viewers and offering his gracious signoff, "I hope you had a good day." On the other hand, Gibson, who Friday retires from the "World News" anchor desk and from ABC as a full-time employee, is bowing out as more than an admired network news star. At 66, he's a proven utility player, game to handle a range of positions ... Read Full Story

George Stephanopoulos began tackling an early shift Monday in his new job co-hosting ABC's "Good Morning America." Robin Roberts termed it "the dawn of a new day" as she welcomed Stephanopoulos beside her at the "GMA" anchor desk. He began the program in strong form with a lengthy segment on President Barack Obama's tough calls to bankers to lend more money to homeowners and small businesses to help fix the economy. In his interview with senior presidential adviser David Axelrod at the White House he also pressed for the current status of health-care legislation. Then, bringing the exchange to a smooth conclusion, he was ... Read Full Story

So Diane Sawyer took over for Charles Gibson last night on ABC's World News. I don't know how "important" her first episode was. She's filled in on the show before and obviously wouldn't suddenly start yelling expletives or start drooling. She handled herself fine (though if I want to see a chick read the news I watch Katie on CBS). What did everyone else think? Diane Sawyer quietly debuted on ABC's World News tonight by interviewing one of the world's craziest powerful men (or is it most powerful crazy men?), Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So, how'd she do? Pretty good, says the Times' Alessandra Stanley. Sawyer displayed her trademark "twinkly warmth," Stanley writes, while questioning Ahmadinejad on Iran's nuclear ambitions, but still managed to push him when he evaded her questions...

Diane Sawyer made her debut as the anchor of ABC's "World News" this evening. Sawyer has filled-in on the newscast in the past, but this was her first night with her name in the program's title. "Good evening and it is so good to be here with you tonight," she said at the start of the broadcast. She then introduced a segment, reported by Jonathan Karl, on the evening's lead story: the health care reform bill. Sawyer was also joined on set...
