A lip-reed aerophone with a predominantly cylindrical bore, the trombone is usually characterised by a telescopic slide with which the player varies the length of the tube to change pitches. There is also the less characteristic valve trombone with three valves similar to a trumpet. A person who plays the trombone is referred to as a trombonist.
