Statutory rape and sexual abuse by an authority figure |
Summary: Sandra Binkley was a math teacher at Portland High School in Portland, Tennessee. She was arrested in March of 2007 after being accused of having sex with a 17-year-old male student on school property during school hours. The boy told his parents, who reported the incident to school administrator. Speaking to a local newspaper, the boy's father said, "He said she was okay, she was real nice. He said she was real friendly." After Binkley's arrest, two more students came forward, alleging sexual encounters with Binkley both on and off school property. In January of 2009, a grand jury indicted Binkley on 9 counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and 3 counts of sexual battery by an authority figure. In April of 2009, Binkley asked the Board of Education for her job back until the trial began. In May of 2009, she gave an interview in which she claimed she was the victim in the case, saying, "There was one incident with one student, who was a month away from being 18. He was bigger than me and he forced himself on me. He came into the room and forced himself upon me."
