LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Woody Harrelson rarely fails to surprise. After artfully taking a banjo to an undead redneck's head in September's "Zombieland," the Oscar-nominated, Texas-born pacifist next appears as Army casualty-notification officer Capt. Tony Stone in the indie drama "The Messenger" and as a sky-is-falling pirate-radio DJ in the disaster epic "2012" -- both opening Friday. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: HOW DID YOU RECONCILE YOUR PERSONAL POLITICS WITH THE NATURE OF "THE MESSENGER" AND THE CHARACTER? Woody Harrelson: I do think probably completely differently than Tony Stone. His big thing is he wants to be in combat. The time I spent with those ... Read Full Story

The undead were alive and well at movie theaters as Woody Harrelson's horror comedy "Zombieland" opened on top with $25 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Yet the general box office was less lively as a flurry of new wide releases did solid to ho-hum business. Overall Hollywood revenues came in at $113.4 million, down 4 percent from the same weekend last year. Sony scored a one-two punch with "Zombieland" and the animated family tale "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," which took in $16.7 million, slipping to second-place after two weekends at No. 1. The movie raised its domestic total to $82.4 million ... Read Full Story
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Falling closer in tone to "Shaun of the Dead" than "28 Days Later" or the George Romero movies, "Zombieland" has its tongue planted firmly in its rancid cheek while still delivering the visceral goodies. It's an admittedly tricky balance that's pulled off with energetic panache by first-time director Ruben Fleischer and the writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. It also has perfectly pitched performances, including the cameo of the year by Bill Murray. But more about that in a bit. While the marketplace hasn't exactly been starved for cranium-crunching zombie fare, this one's a no-brainer boxoffice-wise, certain ... Read Full Story
TORONTO (Reuters) - It may be hard to imagine actor Woody Harrelson, known for his work to legalize marijuana among other causes, as Hollywood's next superhero, so don't. Harrelson outfits himself in a skintight crime-fighting suit for his new movie "Defendor," which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, but for the low-budget film he is far less Superman and far more Don Quixote. Quixote, the literary character who battled windmills and learned of the world in romance books, is not too different from "Defendor" Arthur Poppington, who dons a homemade costume adorned in duct tape and sets out nightly to battle ... Harrelson says his decision to avoid meat and dairy products came not from an activism for animal rights, but when a stranger told him it would improve his complexion. Woody Harrelson already scored a hit this year with Zombieland, but this weekend sees two more Harrelson movies open: 2012 and The Messenger. In 2012, Harrelson plays the conspiracy theorist and pirate radio host Charlie Frost. The character is also an environmental activist and a hemp-loving pacifist, which is probably closer to Harrelson's own personality than the role of an army casualty notification officer in writer/director Oren Moverman...

Patriotism is shown in all sorts of ways. Flying the flag, donating your time to a charity, or in Woody Harrelson’s case, shaving his head, with the help of Stephen Colbert. Watching this clip was the highlight of my month so far. Not that my month has been pathetic (okay it has, [...]
