Teaching diversity to children
Because there are way too many ignorant morons in this world, I've vowed for years to raise my children to be intelligent, understanding, and open-minded. That's probably harder to do than it should be. My one main problem is: what movies and TV shows can I show to my children?! Of course I'll allow them to watch Disney movies and such if they so desire, but isn't there some children's show/movie that doesn't revolve solely around white heterosexual couples? I want my kids to know that there... Read Full Story
Now, you can choose life for your car!
Want to jazz up your car? Buy a "Choose Life" license plate! Show the world your avid stance against choice and your desire to take personal rights away from every and any woman. The best part: proceeds will go to other anti-choice organizations, including the wonderful "crisis pregnancy centers" which work hard to present women with false information and anti-abortion propaganda! And no worries, because not a single dime will go to organizations that dare mention abortion as an option for... Read Full Story
SNL takes on the VP debate!
Candy sex symbol
Is anyone else really creeped out by the ongoing sexualization of the famous Green M&M;? She's the only female M&M; (thus creating this really disturbing potential gang-bang scenario, much like in The Smurfs), and so of course she has to be the one with the high heels and the long legs. Every commercial she's in, she's made into this bizarre cartoon sex symbol (with a delicious chocolate filling) and I find it both creepy and sexist. Read Full Story

Palin: every feminist's nightmare
On Slate.com, there's an article about "feminism and Palin." I immediately braced myself for another commentary by a mistaken journalist about how Palin represents a "new kind of feminism." However, Emily Bazelon's article is about just the opposite - it articulates the "agony" women are feeling as we watch Sarah Palin. Palin is the most prominent woman on the political stage at the moment. By taking unprepared hesitancy and lack of preparation to a sentence-stopping level, she's yanking us... Read Full Story
The diverse supporters of Obama
I saw this lovely website posted on Feministing and I adore it. You have to check it out. It's called the We Are the Ones Project. They travel across the country, photograph Obama supporters, and compile all of the pictures in an online gallery to show the diversity amongst his voters. It's an amazing idea, and the portraits are beautiful. Read Full Story
Parental consent laws = not a good idea
I'm getting nervous. Polls are showing that 49% of Californians support passing Proposition 4, which would require women under the age of 18 to obtain parental consent before getting an abortion. Only 41% oppose it. This is so unbelievably bad. Do you know how many girls would be discouraged to get a legal and safe abortion because they're too terrified to tell their parents? The people who support this appalling proposition don't understand that parents are not always forgiving - many girls... Read Full Story
McCain's foul behavior
Check out this opinion piece on Salon.com about last night's debate. I am so happy that Joan Walsh commented on the fact that McCain acted like a disgruntled child: I wish I'd organized a drinking game around the number of times John McCain said, "Sen. Obama doesn't understand," or found some other way to sneer at Obama as naive and inexperienced. For the most part he refused to even look at Barack Obama over 90 minutes. What an ass. It was hackneyed and condescending and, to me, repellent... Read Full Story
Round 1 of Obama vs. McCain
What did everyone think about the first debate last night? I was very nervous, because these debates can make or break candidates. Overall, I thought each candidate held his own very well. They were both able to make strong arguments without stumbling, and I think Obama proved that he can stay strong in his principles and can undoubtedly fight against the "maverick." Speaking of the devil, I got increasingly angry over the course of the debate with how unbelievably rude and inconsiderate... Read Full Story
