How To Floss Properly

Part of practicing good oral hygiene includes flossing. While brushing is the most important part of practicing good oral hygiene, flossing is just as important. Flossing is used to remove plaque build up on your teeth. Flossing gets in between your teeth where a toothbrush can not reach, as well as below your gum line. But one problem with flossing is that not everybody knows how to floss properly.

Here are some steps to help you floss correctly.

Step one:

Use about eighteen inches of floss.

Step two:

Wind the floss around your two middle fingers; only leave about one to two inches to work with.

Step three:

Hold the floss tightly between your index fingersand your thumb; this will prevent the floss from moving.

Step four:

Gently slide the floss up and down between each tooth. Be sure to follow the natural curve of your tooth, this helps to ensure that the maximum amount of plaque is removed.

Step five:

After doing in between your teeth do the front and back of each tooth, making sure you get below the gum line.

Step six:

Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.

Choosing the right type of floss for your mouth is just as important as knowing how to floss correctly. There are varieties of different types of floss, as well as a variety of flavors. If you are unsure about what kind of floss to use after reading about the different types of floss be sure to take to your dentist or dental hygienist.

Here are the different types of floss available.

Waxed floss:

Waxed floss is slipperier, which allows people who have extremely tight spaces between their teeth to floss more easily. The floss is coated with a waxy substance that allows it to slide gently between the teeth. Waxed floss does not fray as easily as other types of floss.

Unwaxed floss:

Is not nearly as slipperier as waxed floss so does not fit well between tight spaces, but it does make a squeaking noise to let you know that your teeth are clean. This type of floss frays easily and tears a lot easier than waxed floss because there is no outer coating to help hold the strands together.

Woven floss:

Woven floss is made up of two braided strands of cotton; the strands are usually two different colors. You can adjust this type of floss for the spaces between your teeth. If you have tight spaces just pull the floss tight and you can fit it between the most compact spaces, if your spaces are wide you can hold it loosely and the floss will become fuzzy, which helps to fill up the space. Because of its unique design woven floss has more cleaning power because it is more abrasive, but not asslipperier as waxed floss. The floss scrubs the sides of your teeth getting them sparkly clean, but is extremely gentle on your gums.

Floss tape:

Floss tape is for wider spaces, but is smooth like waxed floss. It is gentler on sensitive gums because of its smooth texture and its wide base. If used on tight spaces it can shred or tear.

Which kind of floss you use depends on your teeth and what your dentist recommends, but it seems that woven floss is more universal. It can be used on any type of teeth and any kind of spaces. Regardless of what type of floss you choose the floss will not work correctly if it is not used properly.

Here are some tips to ensure that you are flossing properly.
