Judd Apatow's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" spawned one of the most vibrant and successful runs in American comedy — a frantic, four-year era capped by and summed up in the writer/director/producer's latest film, "Funny People." After the success of "Virgin," Apatow and his comedy cohorts were essentially given the keys to studio lots. Finding themselves green-lit at every turn, the veteran comic and his close-knit group of friends dusted off their previously snubbed screenplays and took advantage of their opportunity with a nonstop flow of films. In just four years, Apatow has either produced or helped write ten movies, among them "Superbad," "Pineapple Express," "Forgetting ... Read Full Story
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The prerelease narrative behind "Funny People" is that funnyman Judd Apatow has gone serious in his third outing as a writer-director and made a drama, albeit one set in the world of stand-up comics. Well, yes and no. It's hard to consider "Funny People" as anything other than a comedy even if it does deal with a comic (Adam Sandler) who has a deadly disease. Indeed, a medical checkup only presents an opportunity for Sandler and his assistant (Seth Rogen) to mock a tall Swedish doctor. But there is a serious side to this film that makes the second ... In the three movies Judd Apatow has directed, his wife, Leslie Mann, has taken on progressively larger roles. In "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," she's a hot-to-trot drunken driver terrifying Steve Carell in the passenger seat; in "Knocked Up," she played Paul Rudd's wife; and in Apatow's latest, "Funny People," he's written Mann an even bigger role — the one-who-got-away from Adam Sandler's character. "He's growing up and learning more about women so he's able to write better female parts," Mann said in a recent interview, referring to her husband. But Mann quickly reconsidered that statement, amending that Apatow has always written good female roles, though ... Read Full Story
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Adam Sandler suffered his worst opening weekend at the North American box office in more than four years on Sunday as his chart-topping comedy "Funny People" debuted at the lower end of expectations. According to studio estimates, the film sold $23.4 million worth of tickets in the three days since opening July 31 across the United States and Canada. The performance marks a rare stumble for its director, Judd Apatow, as well as the latest summer disappointment for its distributor, Universal Pictures. It also marks the year's lowest opening tally for a No. 1 movie, behind several films that opened ... Read Full Story

Funny People was the latest in Judd Apatow's ongoing series of summer comedies, but it was anything but a typical summer comedy: following a successful comedian (played by Apatow's longtime friend Adam Sandler) who reflects on his life after discovering he's going to die, the film offered lots of humor but with decidedly heavier themes lurking beneath the yuks. The film debuts on Blu-ray in a 2-Disc Collector's Edition next week, and the...

Just at the time when an “Apatonian Film” began to take on certain connotations — gross-out humour, pot smoke, full-frontal male nudity — writer-director Judd Apatow changed the formula with Funny People, his autobiographical third feature out this weekend on DVD. Make no mistake, the film, starring Seth Rogen, Adam Sandler and Apatow’s wife Leslie Mann, is still funny, but it’s also a dramatic story, wrestling with life and death, Hollywood...

In our meritorious Monday media column: Judd Apatow questions Ken Auletta's wit, a reporter tries to pretend he is not a vicious murderer, Americans are cheap bastards when it comes to news, and all you need to know about Playboy. Ha, New Yorker media man Ken Auletta moderated some panel about "The Future of Funny," which of course sounds the opposite of funny, but it turned out to be funny mostly because of Judd Apatow mocking Ken Auletta's...
