Quantum mechanics news, blogs, and links. According to Wikipedia: Quantum mechanics is a fundamental branch of theoretical physics that replaces classical mechanics and classical electromagnetism at the atomic and subatomic levels. It is the underlying mathematical framework of many fields of physics and chemistry, including condensed matter physics, atomic physics, molecular physics, computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, particle physics, and nuclear physics. Along with general relativity, quantum mechanics is one of the pillars of modern physics.

The FLASH XASER: Massive Laser Unplugs Einstein

From:  dailygalaxy.com
At the end of the nineteenth century scientists thought they had all the answers.  They were spectacularly wrong, demonstrated by "The Ultraviolet Catasptrophe": a light experiment which simply couldn't be explained by the science of the day.  This lead to quantum mechanics, the particle-wave duality of light, and an entire new mode of science - which we've just broken again with a massive laser! The explanation of the ultraviolet catastrophe was the photon, the idea that light had a... Read Full Story

The Quantum Future of Computing

From:  dailygalaxy.com
"With quantum computing you are able to attack some problems on the time scales of seconds, which might take an almost infinite amount of time with classical computers." Professor David Awschalom of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Quantum computers can efficiently render every physically possible quantum environment, even when vast numbers of universes are interacting. Quantum computers can also efficiently solve certain mathematical problems, such as factorization, which... Read Full Story

1900 to Present

In 1895, Röntgen discovered X-rays, which turned out to be high-frequency electromagnetic radiation. Radioactivity was discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel, and further studied by Marie Curie, Pierre Curie, and others. This initiated the field of nuclear physics. In 1897, Joseph J. Thomson discovered the electron, the elementary particle which carries electrical current in circuits. In 1904, he proposed the first model of the atom, known as the plum pudding model. (The existence of the atom... Read Full Story

Quantum Computing & the Future of the Human Species -A Galaxy Insight

From:  dailygalaxy.com
“Quantum computers have the potential to solve problems that would take a classical computer longer than the age of the universe.” Steve Jurvetson: AI, Nanotech and the Future of the Human Species Visionary venture capitalist, Steve Jurvetson, is quoting quantum-computing pioneer, Oxford Professor David Deutsch, who wrote in his controversial masterpiece, Fabric of Reality : "quantum computers can efficiently render every physically possible quantum environment, even when vast... Lunchtime on Lunar One -Is Hyper-Space Travel Possibile?

From:  dailygalaxy.com
"The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible." -Albert Einstein Last year the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics awarded a prize to Walter Dröscher and Jochem Häuser, a physicist and computer scientist, for an experimental process that might make hyper-space travel a reality (Image: anti-gravity spacesuit).   If the process works it could get a spaceship to Mars and back in about five hours.  The Experimental theories proposed by Dr... Atomic Structure

The atomic structure of the atom was explained to me in college during a lecture in a chemistry class. We were told that the electron , a particle, was traveling around the nucleus of the atom in an orbit but that there was no way to know where the electron was at any given moment. They called this lack of knowledge quantum physics. I instantly lost interest in chemistry and in quantum physics . The illogicality of it appalled me. If something is a particle it occupies a distinct spot in... Read Full Story

How Do Solar Cells Work?

In order to produce electricity we use something called solar cells. These are small and thin devices that gets electrically charged when they are exposed to sunlight. But how do solar cells work exactly? Reading this article will give you the answer about solar cells and how hey are constructed in order to produce electricity. Most solar cells are made from the element silicon. Now this element has the number 14 in the periodic table which means that it has 14 protons and 14 electrons. The... Read Full Story

Creating the universe: consciousness choosing to observe

I’ve been postponing seriously taking on Amit Goswami’s book about Evolution for a while, but it cannot be postponed any longer. The long and short of it is: I have mixed feelings about it. I admire the effort, but the way it’s done isn’t entirely to my taste. Since the author is a quantum physicist, I should perhaps start with my issues about the underlying quantum mechanics. First off: I’m very glad to see someone take on the logical consequences of quantum mechanics for our world view... Read Full Story

The Quantum Activist Amit Goswami

Dr. Amit Goswami, Ph.D, a pioneer of this revolutionary new perspective within science shares with us his vision of the unlimited potential of consciousness as the ground of all being, and how this revelation can actually help us to live better. The Quantum Activist tells the story of a man who challenges us to rethink our very notions of existence and reality, with a force and scope not felt since Einstein. This film bridges the gap between God and Science. The work of Goswami, with... Read Full Story

Limits to quantum mechanics and spiritual freedom

I’ve been reading Creative Evolution: A Physicist’s Resolution Between Darwinism and Intelligent Design, by Amit Goswami . I’m impressed, the chemist in me (I was taught some quantum physics in college) doesn’t find fault. Nor does the biologist or the philosopher (I took biology and philosophy of religion classes in college too). But I do have some reservations with the implications of Amit Goswami’s quantum spirituality for our every day lives. And I have quantum physical reasons to back... Read Full Story
