Michael W. Arnold Sunshine Sports marnold12@tampabay.rr.com Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley giddily announced Sunday afternoon he had completed an exhaustive search to replace football coach Urban Meyer, who resigned several hours earlier in the day to take the Clemson job. In a twist of irony that could only occur on the pages of "Ode to the Gators," Foley hired former Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden to replace Meyer. "What makes this deal so great is it is a two-for-one acquisition," Foley said. "We get Bobby in the deal, too." Bobby Bowden, coach of Florida's greatest rival Florida State, announced he would be hired as ... Read Full Story

Clemson starter Jackson out with torn tendon By PETE IACOBELLI, AP Sports Writer COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)—Clemson defensive tackle Rashaad Jackson needs surgery to fix a torn tendon and will be out until at least midseason. Tigers coach Tommy Bowden made the announcement Monday, two days after Jackson tore a quad tendon during a scrimmage. The school said surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. Jackson, a senior, started 10 of 13 games last year and made 37 tackles, seven for losses. Jackson is also a vocal leader on Clemson’s defensive front. “This is a big loss for our defense because Rashaad is not only a leader ... Read Full Story

Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden was fired today. I could go on and on about the poor timing of this move. The great Clemson university athletic department just signed him to an extention this past December, a deal that was supposed to go through 2014. It seems wierd that a mere 10 months later they have decided that the deal won’t work out. Especially since he hasn’t really been any worse this season than he was throughout most of his Tiger tenure. Read Full Story

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Maryland freshman punter Nick Ferrara didn't know it, but his misfiring right foot saved a legend's job Saturday. Because Ferrara couldn't follow his own coach's instructions during a 29-26 loss, Florida State's Bobby Bowden will have a chance to retire on his own terms.

If anyone doubts that Bobby Bowden should exit the Florida State sideline after this season, the public ranting of his wife toward the university, about how he should be entitled to stay on through at least 2010, ought to convince administrators that it's time to cut the cord. Ann Bowden's comments to USA Today this week are not only embarrassing, but take arrogance to a pretty high level.read more

Clemson's 40-24 win over Florida State means the Tigers have to beat N.C. State, in Raleigh, and Virginia, at home, to win the Atlantic Division. That's it and not even Tommy Bowden could screw that up (or only Tommy Bowden could screw that up). Even if the spirit of Bowden possesses the Tigers, 4-2 in the ACC, and they lose once, they would still hold the tiebreaker over Boston College (3-2), which finishes with Virginia, UNC and Maryland...
