These are strange times indeed. A top aide to Attorney General Alberto "Gonzo" Gonzales will now plead the Fifth Amendment.
The tactic, now pursued by Monica Goodling and essentially perfected by the White House, of stonewalling, misinforming, and generally being uncooperative with Capitol Hill will do little to boost confidence in the AG now that one of his chief aides and architects of the U.S attorney firings will zip up, as it were.
"Look what happened to Libby," stated her attorney John Dowd. "He's toast for opening his trap. If my client testifies, the lid will pop on this thing like a champagne cork. We can't afford to have Ms. Goodling assisting in any effort to get to the bottom of this at
her expense."
Additionally, Dowd was quoted as saying that he saw no inconsistencies in Gonzales' statements about his knowledge of the firings.
"Sure he said on March 13 that he knew nothing about attending any meetings where the firings of U.S. Attorneys was discussed only to see documents surface stating that he was in a meeting to discuss those very firings on November 27. What's inconsistent about that"?, continued Dowd, who has an Honorary Doctorate in "Spin" from an Online University.
"And don't be surprised if the Attorney General invokes the Fifth. We're not going to let this turn into a Left Wing Democrat witch hunt."
When reminded that a number of Republicans are also calling for Gonzales' ouster, Dowd continued to maintain that he saw no inconsistencies there either.
"A witch hunt is a witch hunt. It doesn't matter who is supplying the brooms. And you can forget about "sweeping" my client under the rug. She's already in the closet." ____________
The Rag Box wishes to acknowledge that it feels compelled to state that for a member of the Department of Justice to plead the Fifth Amendment on ANY issue is a perversion of that body and its work. That department can only function with complete candor.
