Everything You Need To Know About: ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’

The new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power offers the most detailed look at the series yet. Set thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the spirit of J. R. R. Tolkien certainly lives in the new big-budget project from Prime Video. And so does the spirit of Peter Jackson, director of the LOTR film trilogy and master of the sweeping landscape shot. There are plenty in the new show, along with a young Galadriel and Elrond, and lots more. Here’s everything you should know about The Rings of Power.

Series showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay are relative unknowns. This is a very weird thing. But Amazon bought the Lord of the Rings rights (supposedly for $250 million) without a script or even a concept in mind. This is also out of the ordinary. Instead, Amazon heard pitches and Payne and McKay won. Their idea, which became The Rings of Power, was to explore the deep history of the Second Age of Middle-earth, which J.R.R. Tolkien reveals in the appendices to The Lord of the Rings.

Smartly, Payne and McKay recruited Simon Tolkien, J.R.R.’s grandson and an author himself, to assist on the production as a consultant. McKay talked about working with a Tolkien with EW:

“The first time we met Simon Tolkien, we had to pinch ourselves — here we were, sitting across the table from the grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien himself,” McKay said. “And that was only the beginning of what has proven to be an extremely enriching and rewarding dialogue. His insights, attention to detail and passion for both the characters and the overall architecture of The Rings of Power are woven throughout the pages of our story. Working with Simon has been the experience of a lifetime.”

Story

As mentioned, we’re going back thousands of years before the Fellowship set out for Mordor with the One Ring in tow, to the Second Age. It’s during this time the One Ring was forged and Sauron first rose to power. McKay has called it a “younger version of the same world you knew, where it’s a little bit of a prequel.”

The prologue to Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring, narrated by Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, offers a glimpse of what we might see in The Rings of Power. As Sauron attempts to cloak the world in darkness forever, the fall of Númenor puts the existence of men at risk. The last alliance of men and elves battle against Sauron and his armies. And Isildur, the king and Aragorn’s ancestor, cuts the One Ring from Sauron’s hand.

Cast

The Rings of Power will feature younger versions of characters we know from The Lord of the Rings. Immortal elves Galadriel and Elrond will be major players, as will Isildur, who becomes king. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) sees the darkness coming. Elrond (Robert Aramayo) prepares his elven warriors and establishes the city of Rivendell. And Isildur (Maxim Baldry) is a sailor who becomes a warrior king. He will reportedly have a different arc than how Tolkien wrote him — a less embarrassing one. (In the books, Isildur keeps the One Ring and is eventually killed by orcs.)

Galadriel and Elrond were, if you recall, played by Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving in the LOTR trilogy. So Clark and Aramayo have big shoes to fill. The two characters will be needed touchstones for fans as this new age of Middle-earth is introduced. There will be a huge ensemble to keep track of. Other characters include: Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Míriel, queen regent of Númenor, kingdom of men; Owain Arthur as Durin IV: prince of the Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm; Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, a Silvan Elf with a forbidden love; Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor, the elf who forges the Rings of Power; and Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn: a human mother and healer.
