Beginnings.Let’s get one thing straight: The Ramones invented punk rock. Every punk band that followed (Sex Pistols, Clash, Joy Division, et al) all took their cues from The Ramones. Anyone who argues otherwise is an idiot.
Joey Ramone started out as The Ramones' drummer but switched positions with DeeDee, who wasn’t fit to lead the band. It didn’t matter: none of the Ramones knew how to play their instruments, nor did they care to learn. And that was the beauty of their statement. Joey Ramone is the quintessential anti-rocker; he’s anti-everything in fact, especially anti-fashion, which, of course, is what makes him so cool.
Career High. It’d be hard to quantify anything in the career of the most iconic punk rocker as a career high or a career low. It would be very punk rock to say Joey Ramone’s career high was their biggest commercial success: “Sheena.” So let’s go with that.
I enjoyed my life when I had nothing... and kinda like the idea of just being happy with me.
- Joey Ramone
ROCK.Career Lows.
We doubt Joey Ramone would appreciate the fact that Converse sells distressed sneakers in his name. Wouldn't he have preferred his imitators jack up their shoes in the mosh pit, or something?
Legacy. Joey Ramone had no ass, a chest, knees or much of a body at all. No one has ever seen his forehead or eyes. His clothes were ripped and looked as though he lived in them and they were always skin-tight and ill-fitting. It was a look that would forever define what it is to “look” punk rock, even if you weren’t (Yes, I’m talking to you Good Charlotte).
Punk Rock is not dead.
Get the look.Don’t. But if you must. See above.
