As we mentioned upon first seeing MILK back in December, Derrick and I were completely "wowed" by the film , and we were rooting for this major cinematic achievement to make a strong showing at this year's Oscars. So imagine our delight when, in addition to Sean Penn's Best Leading Actor statue, MILK's screenwriter, the model-handsome, openly-gay Dustin Lance Black, was awarded the prize in his category. And how great was his acceptance speech?! Derrick and I were both moved to tears by Dustin's moving words. His address to gay and lesbian youth was, in our humble opinion, an instant "classic Oscar moment." In ... Read Full Story

Tina Fey and Steve Martin did a very funny opening for the Best Original Screenplay category, awkwardly acting out a script. Steve also warily cautioned Tina – who looked gorgeous tonight - not to fall in love with him. Tina quoted an unnamed source who said, “‘To write is to live forever’” to which Steve replied, “’The man who wrote that is dead’” There was also a slight Scientology slam based on an alien king who planted millions of tree seeds. The winner for best original screenplay was Dustin Lance Black for Milk . The nominees included Frozen River , written by Courtney Hunt; ... Read Full Story

All the headlines coming out of this afternoon's Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica are about "The Wrestler" winning best picture and its star Mickey Rourke being named best actor. Congratulations to them. But what I care most about are what awards "Milk" won and it came away with two: best supporting actor for James Franco who played a lover of slain gay-rights pioneer Harvey Milk , and best first screenplay for Dustin Lance Black . Awesome. Franco, according to AP, said he was a longtime fan of director Gus Van Sant's films and signed on because of the talent involved with "Milk." "When ... Read Full Story

I'm still giddy over Dustin Lance Black's win for best original screenplay. I wanted to post the entire transcript from backstage which includes a question from me. The transcript states that Lance just said "Hi." But it was more of a "Heeeeyyy!! Hi" Just a week ago, we had a nice chat at Nobu and two weeks before that at the DGA Awards. I have loved seeing him enjoy all this success. Q. Congratulations on your win. It was very touching, and I loved what you said. Do you think President Obama should reverse the stand on gay marriage? A. I think that there's ... Read Full Story

Is Dustin Lance Black strongly opinionated? We'd argue yes. Strongly opinionated about gay rights. Strongly opinionated about nobody seeing his sex photos. And, likely, strongly opinionated that Hope College's decision to ban him from its Michigan campus is ridiculous.
