Practitioners of these arts are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably. Filipino martial arts include tactics for a wide variety of weaponry and combative situations. The weapons vary in design, size, weight, materials and methodology.

Impact Weapons

  • Mano Mano, hands, open-handed, fingers, fists, elbows, knees, sipa or kicks, locks, blocks, and disarming
  • Baston or olisi, eskrima sticks, traditionally crafted from rattan and kamagong
  • Sibat, Tongat, staff

Edged Weapons

  • Daga, dagger or knife - balisong, gunong, punyal
  • Espada, swords - kampilan, kris, kalis, ginunting, barong, pinuti, talibong, golok

Flexible Weapons

  • Lubid, rope
  • Kadena, tanikala, chain
  • Tabak-Toyok and flails two sticks attached together by rope or chain, aka. nunchaku

Projectile Weapons

  • Lipad-lipad, bagakays, Blowgun and darts

Arnis since 2005 has been part of the Palarong Pambansa , the biggest sporting event in the country. However, it was only part of the demo-events during the 2005-2006 Palarong Pambansa in Naga City and was finally included as one of the sporting events during the 2007 Palarong Pambansa in Koronadal, South Cotabato. Eskrima and Kali are the weapons arts of the Philipines, referred to as Filipino Martial Arts or FMA. Training is done with the short stick, single or double. In Eskrima we fight with the stick, so stick training represents stick combat. In Kali we fight with swords, so stick training represents blade combat. That is the real distinction between the two.
