I wholeheartedly agree with MTV 's assessment of the upcoming Sam Mendes comic book adaptation: "With a complicated storyline and some weighty subject matter, it’s tricky to imagine the best way to pull off a live-action Preacher ." I don't believe it can be made with pure commercial motives in mind, because you're better off just making some other comic book movie, but I do think there's a lot of hope for it artistically. No doubt through a complicated medical procedure, Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes has had some of Noah Baumbach's DNA implanted in his genetic code. Focus Features has teamed Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Prods. and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Prods. to develop a feature adaptation of Netherland , a novel by Joseph O’Neill which Harpo optioned last year when it was published. Christopher Hampton is set to write the script for a potential directing vehicle for Mendes. Netherland won O’Neill the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. The novel is set in New York City , where a lonely Dutch expatriate becomes drawn to the sport of cricket and forms an unlikely bond to immigrant culture.
