Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) is defined as tuberculosis that is resistant to rifampicin and isoniazid (resistance to these first line anti-TB drugs defines Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis), as well as to any member of the quinolone family and at least one of the following second-line TB treatments: kanamycin, capreomycin, or amikacin.
The old case definition of XDR-TB is MDR-TB that is also resistant to three or more of the six classes of second-line drugs. This definition should no longer be used.
The principles of treatment for MDR-TB and for XDR-TB are the same. The main difference is that XDR-TB is associated with a much higher mortality rate than MDR-TB, because of a reduced number of effective treatment options.
The epidemiology of XDR-TB is currently not well studied, but it is believed that XDR-TB does not transmit easily in healthy populations, yet is capable of causing epidemics in populations which are already stricken by HIV and therefore more susceptible to TB infection.

Background:
Profound alterations in immune responses associated with uraemia and exacerbated by dialysis increase the risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB) in chronic haemodialysis patients (HDPs). In the current study, was determined the impact of various risk factors on TB development. Our aim was to identify which HDPs need anti-TB preventive therapy.
Methods:
Prospective study of 272 HDPs admitted, through a 36-month period, to our...

During analysis of retrospective community survey data, we identified two patients from Xiji County, south Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region with simultaneous echinococcosis and tuberculosis (TB), representing the first such reports for China. As the echinococcosis chronicity increased, the immune profile in both subjects changed from a Th1 to Th2 response, as shown by a TB skin test, originally positive, becoming negative. Such an elevated Th2...

Christopher Collins was an internationally acclaimed expert on tuberculosis
bacteriology and on the prevention of laboratory-acquired infections. He
made significant contributions to the laboratory study of tuberculosis and,
together with his colleagues Malcolm Yates and John Grange, developed a
series of tests for distinguishing between different types of the bacillus
causing this disease — tests that were subsequently advocated by the...

Two billion people worldwide carry the pathogen that causes tuberculosis (TB), and most of them do not even know they are infected. This is because some 90 percent of people with TB have "latent" infections. They have no symptoms, they can't spread the disease to others and the bug remains dormant in their lungs -- often for years.

October of freshman year is full of stress — roommates, midterms and, for some students, waiting to find out if you have tuberculosis.
For some, this test is a requirement for their field of study. For others, it is a consequence of their nation of origin.
The Student Health Service requires all incoming students to complete a questionnaire designed to identify students at risk for tuberculosis.
