In 1989, Basinger bought the town of Braselton, Georgia for $20 million, with the intention of turning it into a tourist attraction. Financial difficulties meant that she had to sell the town of 1,206 citizens in 1993 to a developer. Shortly after, she was forced to file for bankruptcy. But the joint was critically panned (said one wag: "she left the good cooking at home"), fell into debt, and was closed by 2003.
