Austrian soap star Christoph Waltz clinched the Cannes film festival's best actor award Sunday for his role as a multilingual Nazi in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds." Waltz plays the smooth-talking villain of the flick, SS colonel Hans Landa, whose memorable one-liners had the Cannes audience chortling throughout the film. Critics widely agreed that the 52-year-old -- who spent most of his career in television acting -- outshone a star cast that included Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger or rising Irish star Michael Fassbender. Trained as a stage actor, he spent most of his 30-year career playing bad guys and melancholic types on German television, picking ... Read Full Story

Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet had yet another setback last week when Nicolas Cage walked away after contract negotiations fell through (he couldn’t get enough money). And a new villain had to be found to fill the role at short notice. Well the search didn’t take long. Christoph Waltz has been cast as Chudnofsky, a Los Angeles crime boss who tries to unite the city’s various gangs in order to form a supermafia. If you’re not familiar with Christoph Waltz , go and see Inglourious Basterds . He played ‘the Jew Hunter’ Colonel Hans Lander. Outside of Germany Waltz was a relative unknown, but ... One of the gaping blemishes that was staring at us in Seth Rogen 's The Green Hornet , was that it looked like Nicolas Cage was going to be signing on as the villain in the movie. Cage's star has steadily declined over the years, and though he does still have shining moments, more often than not, his effect is of the negative type. Now comes word from Nikki Finke that not only is Cage stepping away from this project, but that Inglourious Basterd favorite Christoph Waltz has now been cast in his place, playing the role of Chudnofsky. Waltz is a relatively unknown ... Read Full Story

Since scoring a hypnotic debut in ‘Inglorious Basterds,’ his first major movie to be filmed outside Europe, Christoph Waltz is being widely suggested as Oscar material, and according to DHD he has now proved he deserves such high regard by landing one of the most coveted roles in any current production; The villainous ‘Chudnofsky,’ in Michel Gondry’s ‘Green Hornet.’ Originally offered to Nicholas Cage, who declined it last week for reasons unknown, this rightful recasting should implant the 52-year old Vienna-born actor in the Academy’s minds as surely as his pipe-puffing role as Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarrantino’s wartime drama has imprinted his ... The evil Nazi of "Inglourious Basterds" speaks up. Christoph Waltz had racked up nearly 90 credits, mostly in European television, and won his share of awards before the role of Col.
