Robert John Downey Jr. is an Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning American actor and sometimes, musician. His breakout role was a movie called Less Than Zero, where he played a high-society yuppie burnout – the movie was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Or so it seemed for a while. He eventually cleaned up and starred on the television series Ally McBeal as well as in a number of supporting and lead film roles, including the blockbuster smash, Iron Man.

Retire. I am starting to hate that word in Hollywood. Most of the time it doesn't mean what it suggests. Retirement means ending work, maybe taking on a side gig if you really need to or are really bored, but for the most part, it's ending life in the workforce and enjoying a life of leisure. In cinema, however, it seems to be anyone who is taking a break from the biz. Luc Besson's "retired," as is Sean Connery. Now ... Robert Downey Jr.?

Each time an actor or musician or director talks about retiring, it's pretty easy to roll your eyes. Mostly because they hardly ever mean it. But it's also hard to imagine ever voluntarily giving up a life of wealth and fame. The latest star to hint at retirement is Robert Downey Jr., who told Entertainment Weekly that he and his wife Susan "want to begin to be in our lives." Which means watching movies, reading books, painting, of course...

On an episode of the (hilarious) new podcast "WTF With Marc Maron" last week, Marc riffed with Zach Galifianakis, who was on the New Mexico set of the upcoming Todd Phillips comedy Due Date, in which Zach and Robert Downey Jr. play a slacker and a high-strung father-to-be forced to go on a road trip. After listening to Marc and Zach goof around about alpacas, Scientology, and other random subjects, our ears...

Robert Downey Jr. is a master of his craft. He is able to become his characters. There is no Robert Downey Jr., only a white guy in black face, a rich dude wearing a pile of scrap metal, a sleuth masterful enough to sniff out Jude Law’s lost potential. He is so great, in fact, [...]

Okay, maybe I'm crazy. Some people have suggested that, throughout my life. But I had a very strange moment earlier today, looking at the character posters for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie as I left a theater. Maybe you've seen these posters -- I've cropped one in the image on the right. Before my inner Robert Downey Jr. fan could coo "oooh" at the image of the actor, my inner New Orleanian spoke up and said, "Holmes? As in D.H. Holmes...
