Shiloh Pepin (August 1999-Oct. 23, 2009) was one of six people in the world with the disease sirenomelia, nicknamed Mermaid Syndrome. Her two legs joined together when they were formed in the womb, giving her one leg. Doctors initially thought Shiloh would live for 72 hours, but the little girl celebrated her 10th birthday before she died of a blood infection in October 2009. She appeared on Oprah to tell her story and gained national attention for her spunk and upbeat attitude.
Shiloh Pepin, 'Mermaid Girl,' Dies at 10
Shiloh Pepin, nicknamed "Mermaid Girl," died yesterday at 10. She suffered from a rare genetic condition called sirenomela, which caused her legs to be fused together, like a mermaid's tail. She defied doctors' expectations by living beyond a few days, and she was recently on The Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about her life and how happy she was, despite the inhibiting condition.

Shiloh Pepin, 'Mermaid Girl,' RIP
one of the strongest women to have lived life to the fullest

This is such a sad thing to hear. Shiloh brightened our household via the television in the two shows about her life. Such a strong and lovely young lady who taught us all how to live life. That must have been her task in her life - she accomplished it so well. Our deepest sympathies to the family of Shiloh - pain will be in your life for a while, but she has certainly left you a lasting and loving memory that will take over your sadness and keep you filled with hope and love. God bless you all.
I know she is smiling - what a beautiful little girl.
My prayers for the family, Shiloh was very special, she taught us to look beyond our imperfections and see ourselves for who we really are.

She's a Mermaid
shes a freeaakk .
To: channingtatum - YOU are the freak! Why the fuck would you say such an ignorant comment, especially after she just died! She was a born with a condition that has nothing to do with her being a " freak ". She was an amazing and cute and brave little girl. You couldn't have gone through even 1% of what she went through and she did it and did it with a smile. She was awesome! And you are the " freak " for being so freakishly cruel and ignorant. Loser.
Shiloh Pepin was truly an inspiration. She inspired me. My Daughter watched the TLC special they first did on her and we loved it. We wanted to go visit her one day and I thought maybe someday we would because her family doesn't live too far. My Daughter wanted to be friends with her. Her parents were so dedicated and had to do so much everyday just to keep her body functioning so she was healthy & comfortable. She could not do some normal everyday kid things BUT she could do a lot. She learned to swim, liked food and friends and singing and joking and playing like any other kid. She had to go through so much and she was still happy and joking around and had such an awesome laugh, like you could tell she was really getting a kick out of whatever she was laughing at. I am so sorry to hear about what happened. My heart goes out to her parents who are an example of what parents should be - sacrificing, dedicated, committed and loving.
She maybe couldn't do some things but she could do the most important thing - LOVE.

Poster channingtatum is the loser in life. I feel sorry for him/her but not because I care, I just feel sorry that they are such a miserable, shallow and pathetic human. A shame that someone so special and wonderful as Shiloh has her life taken from her, her family and the rest of the world, and people like poster Channingtatum are allowed to live. Of course Shilo in her short life did more good and made more difference in the lives of so many others, than poster channingtatum will make in their entire life or a hundred lives. Sad for you, channingtatum. You're truly pathetic.
It is such a shame that some one could be so heartless. That poor girl was such an inspiration and her poor parents are suffering her loss. For someone to write something so hateful and cruel is just sickening.
How very sad.
My heart just broke hearing about this sweet child's passing. I had seen both her television specials, (on either TLC or Discovery Health), as well as her recent appearance on Oprah and I just always thought she was such a beautiful, remarkable little girl with so much joy and spirit. She made me feel ashamed of myself because while I do have health problems, I've never had the challenges she did and while I'm sure she had her tough days, she seemed to handle it so gracefully. Made me feel terrible for ever feeling sorry for myself. My heart goes out to this sweet angel's family and they will be in my prayers. God bless you, Shiloh.
Let's not even give channingtatum any more Negative Attention; the poster doesn't deserve any.
I was stunned and saddened to read (only today...I hadn't heard when it happened) about Shiloh. My 13-yr. old son & I watched the TLC special and used it to talk about what real difficulties and challenges are...not the day-to-day crap that we think we can't handle. I'll never understand where she got that unbelievable optimism! Truly inspiring! And her parents' total dedication and commitment? I wish I was half the parent that each of them is!
