Did Michelle Williams Just Give The Best Emmy Acceptance Speech Ever?

Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams brought a healthy dose of reality to the Emmys on Sunday, September 22 when she used her big win as an opportunity to advocate for fair pay.

Williams won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her performance in FX’s Fosse/Verdon, but she wasn’t about to accept the honor without thanking the network for getting her everything she needed to shine in the role.

As some fans will recall, Williams was paid just $1,000 for reshoots for the film All the Money in the World while her co-star, Mark Wahlberg, was paid an additional $1.5 million. She has personal experience with unfair pay and the lengths that some companies will go to take advantage of talent.

Williams began her speech by thanking her co-star, Sam Rockwell. Then, she let out the big guns.

“Thank you so much to FX and Fox 21 Studios for supporting me completely and paying me equally because they understood that when you put value into a person, it empowers that person to get in touch with their own inherent value,” Williams said. “And then where do they put that value? They put it into her work.”

“So the next time a woman — and especially a woman of color, because she stands to make 52 cents on the dollar compared to her white male counterpart — tells you what she needs in order to do her job, listen to her, believe her,” Williams went on. “Because one day she might stand in front of you and say thank you for allowing her to succeed because of her workplace environment and not in spite of it.”

“Matilda, this is for you, like everything else,” the actress said before she left the stage.

Matilda Ledger is Williams’s daughter with the late Heath Ledger.

Joey King, Niecy Nash, Aunjanue Ellis, Amy Adams, and Patricia Arquette were also up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, but clearly, it was Williams’s time to shine.

As Williams said her piece, her best friend, Busy Philipps, was seen almost crying in the audience. The two also walked the purple carpet together earlier in the evening.

Here’s to friendship — and giving credit where it’s due!

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sunday, September 22 at Los Angeles’s Microsoft Theater.
