IDV in Bike Insurance: Meaning, Importance & How It’s Calculated

The Insured Declared Value on a bike policy sets the most an owner can recover if the bike is stolen or damaged beyond repair. Two-wheelers are often parked on the street overnight, which makes theft a real risk and the IDV a figure worth understanding. Many riders accept it at whatever level the quote shows. A closer look at how it is built, and where it applies, helps in judging whether a quote is fair.

What IDV Is on a Two-Wheeler Policy

IDV is the insurer’s estimate of the bike’s current market value. It acts as the sum insured under the own-damage section of the policy and caps the payout for theft or total loss. Registration charges, road tax and the cost of insurance are not part of it.

Third-party liability cover pays for injury, death or property damage caused to others, so it carries no IDV. When comparing two-wheeler insurance quotes, IDV appears only on package or standalone own-damage quotes, since a third-party-only policy pays nothing for the rider’s own bike.

How Age Reduces the Figure

The calculation is based on the Manufacturer’s quote price for the model and variant (factory fitted accessories). Ageing payments are then subject to the standard policy wording–5% up to 6 months, 15% up to 1 year, 20% up to 2 years, 30% up to 3 years, 40% up to 4 years and 50% after 5 years. If accessories are added afterwards, they will only be included after being announced.

The IDV of a bike priced at ₹1.2 lakh and 18 months old would be approximately ₹96,000. When the car reaches an age of over 2 years, the rate skews to 30% and the IDV drops to approximately ₹84,000. These numbers are only indicative, and the insurer’s ‘How IDV affects premium’ page demonstrates the trade off for a particular plan.

IDV on Multi-Year and Bundled Policies

The previous rule was that all new two-wheelers sold must have 3rd Party cover for 5 years, from 2018. Any own damage can be purchased for a year, and/or a longer term, depending on the plan. The IDV is typically for a multi-year own-damage policy and is likely set separately for every year on the basis of the depreciation schedule, meaning the value for year three would be lower than the value for year one.

When owners only held a one year own damage policy with long-term third party cover, the set transaction IDV would be established at each own damage renewal. This renewal is when the value can be considered.

Theft: Where IDV Matters Most for Bikes

The IDV in a stolen bike whose case is unreported is thus the payback, minus the compulsory deductible amount, and subject to any policy conditions. Theft-type claims take longer than damage claims as insurance companies typically do not settle as long as there is a non-traceable report from police.

The insurance company will also request an FIR, registration certificate, all original keys, the transfer forms 28, 29 and 30 from the RTO, and a subrogation letter to take the ownership of the bike from the owner and transfer it to the insurance company. Again, this is a varying list as well — the best place to find out the exact list is on the claims page or on the insurer’s helpline.

Accidents and Write-Offs

Policy wordings generally treat a vehicle as a constructive total loss when the cost of retrieval and repair goes beyond 75% of the IDV. The claim is then settled up to the IDV. The insurer either takes the damaged bike as salvage or deducts its salvage value if the owner keeps it.

For damage below that threshold, the IDV does not decide the repair payout. Depreciation of parts and the deductible do. A low idv in bike insurance still matters, since it lowers the threshold and makes a write-off at a weak figure more likely.

Buying a Used Bike

For an IDV on a second-hand bike, it is not based on the amount that was paid for the bike; it is based on the ride price of the bike and its age. If a buyer has paid out more than the actuarial valuation, they shouldn’t assume that is apparent in the policy. The new owner, in general, must make an application within 14 days to transfer the existing policy or apply for a new one, to ensure a continuation of own-damage cover. A quick glance at the IDV and expiry date of the seller’s present policy will provide an idea of the worth of the bike till date and show the time duration of the present cover.

Setting a Realistic Value at Renewal

Insurers typically do offer an IDV range within which the IDV can be adjusted. The bottom of the band will exclude the top of the band, but it will include less per theft claim. If the bike didn’t actually sell it probably doesn’t make sense to move it to the top.

A schedule does not apply to bikes over the age of five; rather, the agreement between owner and insurer is usually based on condition and resale value. The figure is supported by service records and recent listings of the same model. The wording of the policy and the Customer Information Sheet contains a description of each insurer’s approach to these older bikes and it is advisable to read this prior to the value fix for an extra year.
