Tim Berners-Lee made a surprise appearance at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony Friday night, but many people weren't sure what the fuss was all about. Well, you might not recognize the 57-year-old, but you sure do know his work.

Berners-Lee is credited with inventing the World Wide Web! The computer scientist put plans in motion for the Internet back in March 1989. So, he's a pretty smart dude. He also is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which helps develop the Web even further, and he's involved in a handful of other very important, techy projects.

So, when he was placed in front of a keyboard which then powered lights forming the words "This is for everyone," it made sense to those in the know. To everyone else, it was confusing. Even Meredith Vieira was a little unsure of who he was as she co-anchored the coverage of the 4-hour event on NBC. Whoops!

She said on TV: "The title of this section is 'Frankie and Jean say Thanks Tim." Tim Berners-Lee, if you haven't heard of him -- we haven't either -- he's the man credited with creating the World Wide Web."

Of course, this created a bit of a firestorm on Twitter and the like.

So, now you know: Remember who Tim Berners-Lee is and perhaps thank him the next time you can easily look up someone like this thanks to the World Wide Web.
