Does your sweet little kitty have a dark side? Is he really evil and windy? Can he knock a buzzard off a gut wagon?

Although cat flatulence isn’t a serious health problem (unless it’s combined with diarrhea or vomiting), it can be a real nuisance. And it’s no fun for your cat either, since he’s probably suffering from abdominal pain and bloating, too.

What causes cat gas, and more to the point, how can you stop it?

Sometimes diet is the culprit. Some kitties are lactose intolerant, which means they have trouble digesting milk or dairy products. Years ago I had a kitten who was half-starved and very sick when I brought her home. Since I had a milk goat and chickens at the time, I figured that milk and eggs would be a great addition to her kitten chow.

Well…that kitten had the WORST gas. I mean, it was enough to kill you. After a few days of wishing I had a gas mask, I finally thought that maybe it was the eggs. And sure enough, when I stopped feeding her eggs, the gas stopped, which made her a lot easier to be around!

The first thing you should consider with a farting cat is your kitty’s diet. Carbohydrates are broken down into sugar and startch during the process of digestion. Sugar and starch can ferment in the intestine, causing intestinal gas. Too many carbohydrates can cause excess gas.

If you have a farting cat, consider switching him to a food that contains less corn, wheat, or soy. You may need to try several brands before you find one that your kitty can tolerate. Change foods gradually since any dietary changes can cause gas, or even diarrhea!

Does your cat eat too fast? Swallowing air can cause intestinal gas, too. If you have more than one cat, he may be stuffing his food down quick so the other cat can’t get it. Try feeding them in separate rooms. If you just have one cat who eats too fast, you may need to give him several smaller meals during the day instead of one or two big ones.

Exercise can help, so be sure to play with your kitty often.
