Review: ‘Benjamin Button’ amazes, moves Standing a head taller than the worthy, conventional and mostly rather dull entries in this season’s lackluster Oscar race, David Fincher’s "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is a risky romantic epic, grand in ambition and design, alternately flawed and fabulous in execution. Sophisticated but oddball, "Button" will be a challenge for the marketing men, but audiences who take the plunge will likely find themselves entranced — if occasionally enervated. F Scott Fitzgerald’s slim novella presents enormous difficulties to the filmmaker. It is the story of a man born into a wizened and infirm body who gets younger as ... Read Full Story

One of the things that strikes a lot of Oscar viewers is when a movie is nominated for Best Picture but the director isn't nominated for Best Director. There's usually a lot of symmetry there, but a couple of years ago, Ang Lee won Best Director for Brokeback Mountain even though the film didn't win Best Picture. That's fine, if the direction of the film stands out as clearly being that far above what everyone else is doing. I'm not sure in that case that awarding Crash Best Picture helps either move make sense, though. Paul Haggis had a lot more to do as ... Read Full Story

One of the more promising pairings we've heard about in recent months is director David Fincher and Matt Damon . The project is an adaptation of Torso , a "true crime graphic novel" released back in 1998. It's about a string of murders attributed to The Torso Murderer in Cleveland during the 1930s. I don't think I need to explain the name, do I? The investigator on the case was Elliot Ness, likely the only FBI agent you can name. And perhaps because it plays better, the name of the movie had been reportedly changed from Torso to Ness . In the film, Ness ... Read Full Story

A few weeks ago we were lead on that Columbia Pictures and director David Fincher were interested in casting Jesse Eisenberg to play the role of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the Facebook movie written by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network. It seemed they were also keen on Justin Timberlake to join the cast as well. He was set to play Sean Parker, the creator Napster who played a major role in Facebook’s inception. Now according to Variety , Columbia and Fincher have officially cast Eisenberg and Timberlake in the The Social Network . The film’s script was written by Aaron Sorkin ( The ... Read Full Story

A few weeks ago, the future looked a little bleak for the film adaptation of the graphic novel, Torso , by Brian Bendis and Marc Andreyko. The word was that with David Fincher climbing aboard a Keanu Reeves movie about a chef, which Fincher describes as "a celibate sex comedy," Paramount had a deadline for the project that Fincher wouldn't be able to meet. But he has since talked to MTV about the film, which will be called Ness , a more marketable but perhaps less descriptive title of FBI guy Elliot Ness' hunt for Cleveland's Torso Murderer back in the 1930s. Fincher insists ... Read Full Story
