Punxsutawney Phil 2010: Groundhog Sees His Shadow

(Getty Images)more pics »Punxsutawney Phil, the most famous groundhog ever, emerged from his tree stump burrow in Punxsutawney, PA, Tuesday only to find his shadow and six more weeks of winter. Every year, Phil delights fans who travel from around the world to see him and find out whether or not he'll see his shadow.
Punxsutawney Phil (Getty)The legend says that if the groundhog sees his shadow, then there will be six mor weeks of winter, but if he doesn't see his shadow, then spring is right around the corner. Punxsutawney Phil has become a celebrity since the Pennsylvania town that is his namesake began marching him out to predict the weather in 1887. Phil's celebrity status was cemented in the 1993 Bill Murray film, Groundhog Day.
This year, an estimated 12,000 people braved the small town's 18-degree temperatures to green Phil, as he was presented by members of the Inner Circle, a group that cares for the groundhog and interprets his "groundhogese" for onlookers.
Though Phil is purported to be the only true groundhog meteorologist, a rival groundhog, Staten Island Chuck, predicted Tuesday that an early spring was on the way.
