Fortified junk? Still junk. Canadians love compromise - in all things but hockey. I would know because I grew up in Calgary, the land where “howdy” from sidewalk passerby and “pass the Alberta beef, please ” were both standard social norms. It’s that tendency to placate rather than dictate that might be to blame for Canada’s new health care gaffe: fortified junk food. Health Canada is considering an amendment to Canada’s food and drug legislation that would give food manufacturers greater leeway in fortifying candy bars, chips and other fatty fare. My rant this week is about how fast food drive- thru's are not only a huge inconvenience, but are in fact killing the planet. I am not a tree hugger. I am not anti-automobile. And I have not done any quantitative research. In fact, I love a long drive in a fast car on a sunny day. But last Friday on my way north from Toronto, I say something that just turned my stomach. We do this for products we buy to prepare meals at home, and we pour over ingredient lists at the restaurants we frequent. Imagine our surprise last week when we went into our local Tim Horton's for our regular coffee. Sally liked hers with double milk, no sugar. I took mine with double milk, and 2 artificial sweeteners (I know, I know...that will kill me. I'm too old now to change...I'll take the ...

Way to go McDonald’s. In the wake of the Super-Size Me documentary, you drop your super-size menu (although you didn’t cite this is the cause, I think the movie had something to do with it). Now a few year’s later, you bring back super-sized drinks… and call them Hugo instead of Super Size. Granted it isn’t your responsibility to govern how or what people choose to put into their bodies. As a corporate entity, it is a good financial move to supply a demand. But seriously, is a 42oz drink necessary? 410 calories? That’s almost 4 cans of soda. Well not really, you are ...
