The Woodstock veteran Richie Havens will perform Friday, Oct. 16, in a benefit concert for the Heritage School of Music at the Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans. The folk music legend and veteran of the original Woodstock festival, will perform in a special concert to benefit the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation 's signature education program, the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music . Forty years ago today the event that defined the music of a generation began in Bethel, New York. The first act was Richie Havens . Havens wasn't supposed to be the opening act, but he was among the first performers to arrive, and had the least amount of equipment to set up- so he was elected.
