Dementia Soothing Sounds

Soothing Sounds......Rain falling on the roof ..... Ocean waves breaking on the shore .... Bubbling Brook .....We all have our favorites. When the person with some form of Dementia becomes agitated, there is usually some sound that will trigger a happy mood. Maybe its a baby gurgling, a cat purring, a picture of a dog, multi-color lights. Many of these people grew up with radio, a lot more than television. It was their livelihood. Music was a huge part of their life. Most of the men and women were wonderful dancers. They went to ballrooms frequently. They all learned the most popular dance steps. To them, this is a pleasing wonderful memory to them. When they are upset, put a little music on and watch their demeanor change. Go into their world with them. Dance, twirl, smile, laugh. It is truly amazing the change that occurs. There are many different kinds of music but these people remember the old time tunes. My mom had wonderful collections and I am hoping to be able to put up that site here very soon for you. Soon it will be our generation of music. Motown, Beatles, Beach Boys. As the generations become older, so do the music sounds differ. So we will have to update what music was pleasing to each age group. What is good for an 80 y.o. and bring back great memories will not be as wonderful to a 60 y.o. I think Music is, and always be pleasing to all of us. There are very few people I interview before coming into our community that I ask, Do you like Music that have ever said No!
