When a comedy becomes a hit, a movie studio usually puts plans for a sequel into motion almost immediately after they see the successful numbers. So while some of those comedies become tiresome and boorish, 2003’s Bad Santa is one movie that recently deserves a sequel treatment. The Playlist (via collider) has word that Billy Bob Thornton will return to reprise is druken, foul-mouthed Santa act once again in Bad Santa 2. According to the site Dimension films had brought Johnny Rosenthal and John Phillips to write two separate scripts for the movie.
But with Billy Bob Thronton’s confirmation of his return, it seems that the movie studio has found the right script for Bad Santa 2. Although we cannot confirm which script was chosen. Thornton is currently promoting his latest project Jayne Mansfield’s Car, he gave an update on Bad Santa 2:
“The writer is still working on the script, he’s doing his rewrite right now. We saw the first draft and we just had a few little things we wanted to take away or add and he’s doing that. The plan is to shoot that in the fall”
To make sure that it would be the Feel Bad Movie of Christmas, Thornton went on to say that Bad Santa 2 would be scheduled for a tentative Christmas 2013 release. Sounds awesome to me! With Bad Santa 2 in the early planning stages, Thornton will be directing And Then We Drove, which is scheduled to begin shooting this summer. The movie is inspired by his previous relationship with Angelina Jolie.
