Tips:
Behind The Scenes at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando
Article by Herb Leibacher
There’s magic in the air in each turn. But are you prepared to see beyond the magic and discover how Walt Disney World lets it all happen? If you are, why not go on the unique day-long tour offered that’ll give you an opportunity to look behind the scenes? It is for grown-ups only. The Backstage Magic Tour goes on for 6 to 8 hours and is limited to people upwards of 16. Lunch is part of the package. Cost is 4 a person.
Can You Handle It?
You are mature now and you can handle it. Who wouldn’t wish to see behind the scenes? On Disney’s Backstage Magic Tour, you have the opportunity to learn how the magic happens backstage at Epcot, the Magic Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Usually, these zones are off limits. And no photos are permitted backstage.
The day-long tour begins at Epcot in the morning. Even then it is unique because the park isn’t even open yet and barely anybody is there. You make the acquaintance of the guide and receive headsets so that you could hear the guide without the guide needing to scream. Kind of makes you think about what’s about to come next, right?
After a backstage tour at Epcot, you find a private bus waiting for you and your group behind the Seas Pavilion. The bus takes you to World Showcase. Forget about how nondescript the backs of the buildings look. You know that on the other side of the stage, it is magical. At the American Adventure in the World Showcase, your guide talks to you about the building and the attraction, as well as the workings of the show.
Costumes and Wigs
From the American Adventure, you drive to the Cast Center. Golly, get a load of all those costumes! The Cast Center is where the costumes are kept until they’re worn out by the cast members. Let us hope you did not think those were all factual characters out there in Disney World. The guide will tell you about what it’s like to be a cast member. You may even catch sight of a character getting dressed for work. Yes, characters need to work, too. You likely already knew that princesses wear wigs. You will discover plenty of princess wigs prepared for the princesses to put on. Did you have any idea that there were so many princesses, innumerable individuals working at Walt Disney World?
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the guide will escort you around the costuming department where most of the cast costumes are assembled. You in all likelihood never thought that they make use of computers to make the costumes. That’s how it is done.
Lunch at Whispering Canyon
After Hollywood Studios, the tour group transfers to Wilderness Lodge for a meal at Whispering Canyon Cafe. Lunch is included in the fee for the tour, obviously. The cast members, called waitresses in the real world, are great characters and can be particularly pleasing on the Backstage Tour.
On to the Magic Kingdom
The Backstage Tour comprises of visits to backstage buildings where, for instance, the laundry is accomplished for the entire Disney World. That’s lots of laundry. A building, Holiday Services, has all the ornaments for Christmas and other holidays. At Central Shops, the vehicles for those spine-tingling rides are built and kept in good working order. (You probably believed all that occurred by magic, didn’t you?) Picture finding logs for Splash Mountain and honey pots for Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh being built. You will also learn how audio animatronic figures work and even have an opportunity to play with a few of them.
Finally, comes the Utilidors. What’s that, you think? These are the underground tunnels beneath the Magic Kingdom that run Disney World’s most popular theme park. Here you really need to make use of your imagination, because what you look at is mainly painted cinder block walls. But hey, what does a treasure trove look like? A cave, right?
You hoped for backstage, and that’s what backstage looks like.
