Aoi Sola Inspires Chinese Hackers to Breach the 'Great Firewall' of China

It turns out Japanese adult actress Aoi Sola is so popular with her fans in China that they're willing to fight massive government censorship just to read her Twitter. The Chinese government is known for its Great Firewall that prevents the country's Internet users from accessing Web sites with content deemed offensive by the Chinese government.

Those Web sites do include some adult material, but the policy has been much more controversial for shutting down access to Web sites that encourage political opposition to the stil-Communist (in name at least) government. Enter Aoi Sola's Twitter account.

Aoi Sola (AKA Sora Aoi) is a Japanese adult actress who has made dozens of pornographic videos popular throughout her home country as well as China, Korea, Thailand and beyond. She created a Twitter account March 30, and when her Chinese fans heard, they wanted to check it out. Only China's "Great Firewall" was preventing them from accessing Twitter.

So after years of living with a heavily-censored version of the Internet, Chinese netizens finally cracked the Great Firewall to get to Aoi Sola's Twitter account with illegal software that spread quickly among her fans.

Technical experts point out that getting past China's firewall is relatively simple for those with the technical know-how, but it's just difficult enough to keep many Chinese citizens from trying. For her part, Aoi seems flattered by the attention. "The 'Twitter incident' has caused reverberations in China and Japan. Speaking truthfully, this was a little unexpected, even for me," reads a post onher blog translated by Danwei.org.

"Speaking 'without modesty,' I know that there are some Aoi fans in Asia," she wrote. "But when I directly faced the figures on Twitter, I could hardly hide my surprise. Thanks everybody for tweeting about me."
