what can i stock my 20 gallon tank freshwater
fish tank with?
GoldFish.
2 male 2 female. If you want some hardy and very good looking fish dinos, they are very hardy and like to be in a school. Platys are a good choice, either all males or all females unless you want to have a bunch of fry. Guppies would be a good choice to just make sure there all males or females so they wont breedCories, neon tetra, zebra danios, small peaceful shrimp, guppies ect.Be careful putting live sand it does things to your PH. I would suggest using PH Neutral sand. Is this your first tank? It sounds like it. If so I suggest Livebearers. However just one gender. Male guppies are colorful. You can get 6 of them and some bottom dwellers. THey’re good beginer fish. Stay away from goldfish unless you just want one fancy type. If you want a goldfish you’ll need to get a filter rated for double the capacity and I would stay away from live plants with goldfish… they’ll eat your investment. Also… get low light plants like Hornwort, java fern… they don’t need much light or CO2.you can get either a little bit og bif fish or many small fish your choice so you can get like 2 or 3 different type of schooling fish like tetras along with 4 cories and you are stocked or get like 1 dwarf gourami and 5 cherry barbs and 5 khuli loaches and 1 group of 5 tetras.
or get 3 platies 3 guppies and 4 otto’s and 1 schooling fish.
or you can get like 4 through 5 fancy goldfish or like 2 kribensis cichlid and thats it or go to this website to stock your tank : aqadvisor.com
or get zebra danios they are pretty easy to care for and you shouldnt get live sand.any fish that get along ask the fish person about that use the 1inch per gallon ruleUse a fine substrate with larger chips below for planting live aquatics. Personally i use actual river sand, gathered from my local river and purified for the top layer, and i use river clay gathered from the shallow plant growing sections of the river. as the mid layer of substrate. i use a bottom substrate that looks like chipped up bricks and it promotes beneficial bacterial growth in the tank.
With tanks set up in this manner, Corydoras are AMAZING fish to add. they love fine silty bottoms to root through much like pigs do. they are an active schooling fish when kept in a well planted environment. Corydoras swim on the bottom except for dwarf corydoras which occupy the mid region of the tank for some reason.
I would suggest getting 4-6 of these fish as they do need schools to be healthy.
If you want to know how to sex a corydora catfish here is how you do it.
Females have rounded stomachs and when resting on the tank floor, their barbels ( whiskers) will not be able to touch the ground.
Males Have flat stomachs and their barbels rest on the ground.
Another species of fish i would recommend for some fun and interesting are actually guppys.
Most people think of guppys as boring, typical fish but they can actually form a very interesting community tank top swimmer. I would suggest getting 2-3 females per male.
NEVER EVER have More males then females in a tank. They fight and will eventually kill eachother. They will also attempt to mate with female fish of other species. Males are however peaceful if given 2-3 females to themselves.
Here is how to sex a guppy. Males have a long, straight anal fin that is used for reproduction.
Females have a triangular Anal fin.
Some interesting facts on guppys are that they are live bearing fish, ( meaning they give live birth to developed young) that will have babies every 25-32 days. A female once coupled with a male can actually store his sperm for many months after wards therefore allowing them to mate once and have around 4 pregnancy’s after just 1 spawning.
If your making it a planted tank i would suggest getting a schooling fish. Depending on what you prefer you can go with Neon Tetras, Black Finned tetras ( i prefer black finned) Zebra danios, Cardinal tetras and a few others.
I would suggest getting 7-9 of these fish.
OR
For a very cool and social fish Try adding in a school of Ghost/Glass Catfish. As with all the schooling fish listed above they do need members of their own species. Keep about 5 of these see through catfish.
NOTE Glass Catfish are top – mid swimmers and school.
All of the species i have mention are very compatible and are actually some of my favorites to have in the same tank. They all get along together and make a very appealing tank.
Here is some advice on making a beautiful tank.
Live plants are the best thing you can do for the health, the comfort, the behavior and actually in some instances the color of your fish.
A properly planted tank will provide fish with a sense of safety, knowing they can dart into hiding if a large predator approaches ( they have no idea that they are confined in a small tank and are typically ingrained with a fear of larger fish. Excessive inbreeding and tank raising will dull this natural reaction, but keep in mind, many fish are still captured in the wild) .
Hint: you can attach beautiful plants, even moss onto objects with cotton thread used for sewing. Many pros and aquarium enthusiasts use this method to produce beautiful and natural looking environments. if you want some images of how to do this feel free to email me.
Note, Mopani wood, while an excellent focal point in tanks, needs to be soaked in a bucket about 6 times before placing into the home tank. this is because it acts like a giant tea bag and will stain your water a dark brown which can be hard to get rid of even with water clearing droplets.
Each time you soak the wood, wait until the water is as brown as it gets, agitate the water each time, this will help release the coloration. Once its as brown as it will get, dump out the water and refill the bucket, do this until the coloration appears no more. I KNOW that its so much easier to put straight into the tank but you WILL regret it.
I place mopani wood in the center of my tanks as it allows Bottom swimmers to seek shelter beneath its structure, Plecos actually eat mopani wood very slowly, And i tie my plants to the wood and they will take root and make a very visually appealing scene . i suggest tying java moss onto the top of the mopani wood and then adding some large leaved plants or sword plants on the sides of the wood ( In between the leg like arms of the wood.)

Good Luck
~ Dan BBlack Fins, Silver Dollars, Tetras- = bottom , middle, social happiness. make sure you get a nice hiding place, ornament. happy fishing! If you don’t want genders that are over-dominant, you should stay away from all livebearers; guppies, platies, mollies, swordtails. The males for all of those are very hard on the females, so much so that the females need a high number ratio compared to the males or their health may suffer.
I suggest getting a school of 6 bottom dwellers like Corydoras Catfish (6 of one species) and then 8 of a mid or upper dwelling schooling fish. Some nice Catfish options are Albino Cories, Peppered Cories, Panda Cories, or Julii Cories. If you’d rather have a non-catfish bottom dweller you could also try 6 Kuhli Loaches. Any of those species are compatible with all the mid/upper dwelling fish I’m listing.
Some peaceful upper/mid dwelling fish are Dwarf Pencilfish, Flame Tetras, Glowlight Danios, Marbled Hatchetfish (although they jump with loud noises), Turquoise Danios, Neon or Cardinal Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Rummynose Tetras, or Zebra Danios. Those are all peaceful schooling fish that would be very happy in a group of 8. If you choose one species from each category, you will be well stocked.
That sand is not meant for freshwater tanks, it comes with creatures that live in salt water and will really wreak havoc on a fresh water aquarium.
i know 20 gallon is not that big so i dont plan on overstocking. i’m just looking for a variety of fish that are healthy together and genders that are not over-dominant. i am planning on putting live plants in the aquarium. i have a heater and a filter. i know a little bit about the nitrogen cycle and ph levels and ammonia levels.
can you also specify the gender of the fish?
&& is something like CaribSea® Ocean Direct™ Caribbean Live Sand okay in a freshwater tank?
Clients across American Seeing Benefits of Enzyme Cleansing Solutions from Healthy Living
Article by Seo5 Consulting
The average American diet now includes a large amount of processed food. This recent dietary trend is having a detrimental effect on the overall health of the American population as people struggle to maintain a healthy balance between cost-effective and quick food options that offer little nutritional value and food items that will provide their bodies with much-needed vitamins and minerals. With that in mind, many are now searching for low cost dietary supplements that will help put them back on the right track toward living a healthy lifestyle. And one company is now allowing Americans to source cost effective health food products through their catalogue which includes cleansing enzyme products, liver improvement supplements and much more.
Healthy Living is comprised of a group of health and wellness coaches who had become concerned about the lack of nutritional value within the contemporary American diet. They started Healthy Living with the goal of helping clients to improve their overall health by offering products that reduced the amount of toxins within their systems. The company’s product catalogue includes many leading solutions that have been manufactured by specialists in dietary health. Consider for example their Cleansing Enzymes product. This solution has been created to optimize the major gateway to good overall health – efficient digesting. It offers several important components designed to improve the function of the client’s digestive system. These components include digestive bitters that stimulate the production of gastric juices, enzymes that break down food products into useable nutrients, botanicals that stop microorganism fermentation in the stomach, botanicals for boosting liver strength and probiotics that help maintain the good protective bacteria in the gut.
This leading class enzyme cleansing product is an essential tool in the battle for dietary control because it deals directly with the gastrointestinal system, which, when it begins to lose efficiency creates the ideal conditions for disease to thrive. That’s because a poorly working gastrointestinal system is unable to assimilate the correct amount of vitamins necessary for healthy body function and this allow toxins to grow within the body due to incomplete digestion of food and once these toxins get into the blood stream they can lead to autoimmune disease.
Another of the great features of Healthy Living’s Cleansing Enzymes product is that it contains 17pH balanced enzymes to help digest foods and clear away debris from the human body. One of the enzymes contained within this product is the serratia peptidase enzyme which emanates from silkworms and can help digest away cholesterol from arterial walls, improving the condition of the heart.
When comparing the company’s new enzyme cleansing solution to products offered by other health product providers, clientele are often impressed to find out that it acts directly on the toxins within the gut and not on the food within the area or on the gut itself. The product has been designed to target the toxin storage sites within the circulatory and eliminatory systems, where it locates toxins, breaks them down and sends them out of the body, helping to support healthy body function and over time instilling a sense of vitality and wellness that cannot be accomplished through any off-the-shelf remedy.
