With the considerable amount of names in baseball that have taken substances, can we even believe the candor of the contest anymore? Homerun hitters such as Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds to high momentum pitchers such as Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte have been incriminated with steroid or HGH use. Most currently Dodger slugger Manny Ramirez was rejected for fifty games due to use of a banned material. Ramirez, like many other athletic athletes, professed that he used the substances through a practitioner's prescription without realizing that the remedy involved the banned substance. These players' names, which plenty of us display across our shoulders ... Read Full Story

Hard to come away from this story http://www.contracostatimes.com/sports/ci_11905785 with anything other than the impression that the A's are sticking a big foam middle finger at the city of Oakland at this point in the Gimme-a-Ballpark Game. But upon closer inspection, the situation isn't really as bad as it looks because the "effort" by Oakland to keeps the A's in town isn't anything to get excited about. It's just a bunch of hot air out of the mayor's office. I have to admit that I was initially a little impressed and surprised when I heard that Mayor Ron Dellums, along with council president Jane Brunner, ... Read Full Story

(From Wordpress Version - Original Posted June 17, 2008 ) This post may not make sense unless you’ve read the first post in this two part series. I’ll give you a few minutes to go read that one if you haven’t done so already…Go ahead, I’ll wait… Finished, already? Great! Moving on… As a father, if you’re worth worth the rock they’ll carve your name into one day, you want your children to have more than you did when you were a kid. No matter what your childhood was like, rich or poor, loving or broken, happily forgotten or cherished, you want more than ... Read Full Story

(From Wordpress Version - Original Posted June 16, 2008 ) I’m sorry, but TNB is officially a long winded blog. Guys and Gals, I can’t seem to figure out how to write short posts. I swear I’ll do my best to get better at it. I’ve decided to do this as a two part post so the best part will come later today: Anyways, here goes: I’m beginning to realize that most of my Father/Son posts will attempt to start with the following statement: “Tonight is a night that I will never forget.” My wife started to doubt me when I began doing something ... The historic rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will apparantly never die. Construction workers on the in-progress Yankee stadium removed a Red Sox jersey buried beneath the concrete in a service corridor. After learning that a construction worker, named Gino Castignoli, buried the jersey to curse the Yankees, workers spent five hours on Saturday drilling in search of the uniform. The jersey was finally found under two feet of concrete. The jersey, still mostly entact was a David Ortiz jersey, and will be donated to the Boston area charity the Jimmy Fund, affiliated with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Because that's ... Taking an entirely different approach than Mike Silva, Maury Brown has been monitoring Roger Clemens’ folksy words of wisdom via Twitter, and unlike the gentleman from NY Baseball Digest, actually engaged the Rocket (above, right) in something approaching a philosophical debate. Clemens was asked, “What is the best advice that you ever got?” Here’s the [...]

The Daily News I-Team is still around? I thought Tony Isabella was involved and it just sorta dissolved. Former congressman Tom Davis, who once led the House committee that helped destroy the baseball legacies of Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens, says he applauds McGwire’s return but thinks Clemens was in denial when he testified before Congress. “Everybody was speeding, and these are just the guys that got the tickets,” says Davis of the...

The playoffs are starting at Yankee Stadium and, of course, Yogi Berra is bouncing around, visiting with players, putting smiles on everyone's face as only he can do. Yogi, in addition to being a great catcher and hitter, also had the reputation for being lucky, and a good luck charm, going back to the day he dropped Ted Williams pop-up for the last out of Allie Reynolds no-hitter. Williams popped the next pitch up, and Yogi, given a...

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t endorse the harassment of retired sportsmen via social networking platforms, but when the athlete in question is the newly Tweeting Roger Clemens, I’m willing to make a big exception. Unsatisfied with The Rocket dropping such science as “”Thx to all the guys in NICKELBACK,” NY Baseball Digest’s Mike Silva couldn’t resist an [...]

1902 - Chicago's Jim Callaghan tossed the White Sox's first no-hitter, beating Detroit 2-0. 1908 - Frank Smith of the Chicago White Sox threw his second career no-hitter for a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. 1924 - Grover Cleveland ...

With three strikeouts last night against the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Mark Reynolds broke his own single-season strike record of 204. Reynolds now has 206 strikeouts on the season. While some people think this is the ultimate embarrassment for the hitter, I say what’s the big deal? Strikeouts for a hitter is the most overrated stat in baseball. Here is all you need to know about strikeouts: Reggie Jackson is the career...
