The death of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto is responsible for recent gas price hikes, according to Canadian Liberal MP Dan McTeague. This after an increase in the Greater Toronto area to near $1.05/litre. What I find interesting here is that a 3 cent jump in Toronto is newsworthy enough to connect it to a specific event. In Vancouver, swings much larger are barely noted, and in other areas of British Columbia the prices have been near that since ’settling’ down after the prices dropped from their approximate $1.25 peak.
That being said, I have no doubt that Bhutto’s death will have an impact on the stability of Pakistan and therefore the region. Instability causes uncertainty, and uncertainty in volatile commodities markets inevitably causes prices to rise.
