Blue Ridge Parkway

Supporters of the Blue Ridge Parkway want to engage local communities in efforts to sustain the 469-mile scenic roadway.

It runs for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina. The simple, searchable site has route maps, information about trails and camping and a directory of towns, attractions, and tourist facilities.

It began as a massive federal project to get people back to work during The Great Depression.

Governor Tim Kaine was in town Friday to celebrate the 75th birthday of the Blue Ridge Parkway. During his prepared remarks to an audience of dignitaries and Parkway supporters, Kaine said, “We don’t know where the bottom is on the economy. We have to be realistic.”

Fall colors have begun along the Blue Ridge Parkway north to Craggy Gardens from Asheville.
