Upset over the birth of a girl, a woman flung the baby out of an ambulance in Rajasthan when she was being taken to her house from a health centre after delivery, police said Thursday. The baby survived and is stable.

The woman, identified as Madhu, delivered a baby girl Wednesday at a primary health centre in Aspur village of Dungarpur district, some 550 km from state capital Jaipur.

“An ambulance was taking her and the new-born child to her house in Talera village Wednesday evening when she threw the baby out of the window at a turn when the vehicle slowed down. The baby landed in some bushes and survived,” said a police officer.

Some villagers spotted the child and informed the health centre. “The information was forwarded to the same ambulance,” said the officer.

The ambulance staff picked up the baby and brought her to the primary health centre, where doctors realised that she could be Madhu's daughter.

“Madhu’s husband was contacted Thursday morning and he confirmed that the baby was his daughter,” said the officer.

The police said they are yet to file a case against the mother. “Statements of the couple, health centre, ambulance staff and villagers who spotted the baby are being taken,” the officer said.
