5 stars for “Tower of London” various stars for the other films in the set The Boris Karloff Collection (Tower of London / The Black Castle / The Climax / The Strange Door / Night Key) Review
Not to be confused with the collection of other Karloff is the only one to get. All the films look very good here. Occasionally dirt and stains appear, but this is rare. Of all the movies here, “The Black Castle” seems a bit contradictory, but as a whole looks pretty good. “The Climax” deep, rich colors has captured the color Technicolor original, although the skin tones seem a little color and probably should have been corrected. Article audio sound without distortion and the dialogue at all clear films. Features the original theatrical trailer and have nothing else.
Tower of London Karloff has in fine form with Vincent Price appears in one of his first film roles. With the sets of “Son of Frankenstein” director Roland V. Lee tells the famous story of King Richard III. Karloff plays his club feet death and assistant executioner who kills in the line of succession, so that Richard to reach the throne. This provides one of the best performances of the 30 years that Karloff death of the executioner. Rathbone and Price are both in their exceptional performance as well. In “The Climax” Dr. Hohner (Karloff) plays a doctor drama with a mysterious past. He seems murdered his lover, who was the star soprano year earlier. When is a beautiful young opera star amount, it reminds Hohner of his mistress and he is with the production of its own Songbird, except that he was willing to murder is possessed. Originally, “The Climax” was designed as a thriller tracks the version of Claude Rains’ Phantom of the Opera “by its producer / director George Waggner (The Wolf Man”). Of games on a par with “Phantom” movie has the production values far more important than the budget for the film and looks great in this transfer. “The Strange Door” was part of a series of two films that Karloff in the 50s with “The Black Castle”, which used the same rates. Of the two “strange door” is a great gothic horror thriller that benefits from good performance Karloff and Charles Laughton. Filled with humor, comic dialogue and a strong leadership through film and television vet Joseph Pevney (“The Wild Wild West”, “Star Trek”) the film is a real winner. Dennis de Beaulieu (Richard Wyler) is taken hostage and forced the niece (Sally Forest) Maletroit marry the Lord (Charles Laughton expertly chewing the scenery) as part of a plot of revenge against Maletroit strange brother (Paul Cavanagh). With the help of photovoltaic (Karloff), an officer Dennis White and the hope of escaping the mad Maletroit.
“Night Key” one of the few films here, I do not remember seeing before. Karloff plays an inventor who has a special alarm system. His ideas fly, he plots with revenage crooks with his key special evening that most alarm systems wire designed to prevent it. Performance with a beautiful “Night Key” provides an excellent vehicle for Karloff as an actor, but it’s not really a horror film. It’s a solid B-movie that fans of Karloff and know the way crime to appreciate.
Karloff fans can rejoice, even the least of these films have firm ideas of Karloff and other actors. If we now have a whole DVD with performances and TV shows can have classic “Thriller” Karloff fans will be very happy.
