From WWE.com’s “What if” section, What if The Montreal Screwjob was Reverse.![]()
Some harsh but TRUE words from Triple H! I think Lawler really summed up the situation nicely and I think all this proves is that Bret Hart is getting in his own way. Sad!
Bret Hart:
“The Simple truth is that if someone came to me and said, ‘We want you to do this to Shawn Michaels,’ I would’ve said there’s a better way than to do that in front of his family – even if I didn’t like him. I don’t do business like that. I would never have gone in the ring with any underhanded plan. I would rather go up to the person and work out a compromise, I would’ve talked it out. That’s the part of professionalism that Michaels didn’t know anything about then. I don’t know that I’d still be active in WWE, but I’d still be part of the company. I always envisioned myself as playing an instrumental role in he direction the wrestling business would have taken.”
Stone Cold Steve Austin:
What if Shawn got screwed instead of Bret? That’s really a tough question, but I don’t think anything would’ve changed. There are so many ramifications that came out of that [night in Montreal]. Who knows what would’ve happened and where we would’ve been.
I do think that Austin 3:16 would’ve still happened, DX would’ve still happened. All the big, good things would’ve still happened. I just would’ve been another different interesting turn…but still, we know it as it happened.”
Triple H:
“That would’ve never happened. We’re not that stupid.”
Jerry Lawler:
“I certainly think that Shawn Michaels would’ve probably handled it differently than Bret Hart. Bret…kind of went into this shell and said, “I’m going to take my ball and go home.” If it was Shawn, there would’ve been a huge explosion. [HBK] would’ve been much more vocal and screamed to the world about the screwjob.
If it were Michaels instead of Bret, eventually, things may have been worked out and smoothed over; it would’ve been only a matter of time before Shawn would’ve been back on board in WWE. He has a much different disposition than Bret Hart. I think Shawn would’ve seen the business side of it a little quicker than Bret did. I consumed Bret and it seethed inside him to this day. And I think that’s been a major factor since Bret hasn’t been able to come back and do some great things with this company.”
Jim Neidhart:
“You mean, what if that watch was double-reversed? (Laughs) If the two roles were reversed, hypothetically, Bret still might have something to do with WWE. Did he have a lot to offer? Absolutely. The ideas that he has are tremendous. He has a mind better than most people, in terms of matchmaking. He grew up doing that.
[With Bret and HBK], you’ve got two completely different personalities. Bret’s an individual and a great wrestler and so is Shawn, though he didn’t have the same temperament as [the Hitman]. He also didn’t have a family and wife and four kids like Bret did.
They were both in that spot at the top. If you’ve ever been World Champion, it’s lonely at the top and everyone’s trying to stab you in the back. In our business, the WWE Championship is the most powerful title.
But it they were in each other’s boots that night, I really don’t think that Shawn could spit as far as Bret could at Vince and hit him dead-on.”
