Bridesmaid Dresses: Avoiding Common Mistakes

Avoid These Common Mistakes When Selecting Bridesmaid Dresses

Your bridesmaids are among the most important people involved in your wedding. They have planned parties on your behalf, gone with you to multiple dress fittings and catering meetings, and have tackled all of the unforeseen incidences that have occurred pre-wedding day. Your bridesmaids have done a terrific job by helping you prepare for your special day; return the favor by avoiding the following common mistakes to ensure that the bridesmaid dresses you select will make them look their best.

One Style Does Not Fit All

In past years, many brides chose the exact same dress, in the exact same color, for their bridesmaids as they walked down the aisle. These days, this situation only works if your bridesmaids are clones of one another, with the same curves and body type. Bridesmaids come in all shapes and sizes, and there are an equal amount of bridesmaid dress styles to choose from.

In more recent times, many brides have chosen several dress styles for their bridesmaids, not just one style of dress they all have to fit into. This can be achieved while still maintaining complete coordination. Ensure the happiness of your bridesmaids by allowing them to pick out the style of dress that best suits their body type, in the colors that you have chosen. If you are having a winter wedding, for example, and one of your bridesmaids is a little curvier, she can choose a spaghetti-strap, long chiffon dress, with a beaded empire waist, in the classic wine color. A more petite bridesmaid can wear a flattering strapless satin ball gown, with side ruching and a beaded bodice, in the same wine shade.

If you are having a summer wedding, the curvier bridesmaid can choose to wear a strapless chiffon short dress with a ruched bust and an asymmetrical hem. The less curvaceous bridesmaid can don a short, sleeveless jersey dress, in the same color, with center front ruching and charmeuse bands, to accentuate her specific body type.

Your Colors Might Not Be Perfect

Many brides will agree that the colors they have selected for their wedding are their favorite colors. In many cases, the bride will wear a traditional white gown, or one of a similar hue. Because of this, the bride does not have to worry about how certain colors look against her skin tone, hair color, and body type.

To ensure that your bridesmaids feel as beautiful in their bridesmaid dresses as you do in your
wedding gown, consider selecting a color palette instead of specific colors. This way, your bridesmaid with dark brown hair and an olive skin tone will look as stunning in her wisteria sleeveless crinkle chiffon short dress, as the bridesmaid with blonde hair and porcelain skin tone wearing the same dress in a lapis shade. Allowing your bridesmaids to wear different styles, while staying within your selected color palette, will give your wedding photographs a unique and pleasant variety.

Wearing the Dress Again

Contrary to what has been seen in wedding movies for centuries, not many bridesmaids will hem or dye their bridesmaid dresses to wear them a second time.

This, however, does not always have to be the case. By taking time to peruse all of the bridesmaid dress options available, you and your bridesmaids can agree on a dress that can be elegant enough for your wedding, as well as for another event they might be attending.

Consider pairing high heels with a short, strapless, pleated dress in crinkle chiffon for your bridesmaids to wear as they precede you down the aisle. This dress can then be paired with adorable flats and a cashmere cardigan for an after-work happy hour. After wearing the sleeveless chiffon short dress with satin beaded straps to your wedding, your bridesmaid can wear that same dress to a graduation party or other outdoor event.

Know How Important They Are

Your bridesmaids have been there for you through thick and thin. They have helped you in every way possible to make sure that your wedding is as wonderful as you had imagined. Therefore, it is important to remember that their opinions and tastes matter when it comes to their attire. If your bridesmaid has expressed that she does not feel comfortable wearing a strapless metallic crepe short dress, with a tab waist and brooch, you should not force her to wear it. Instead, decide on dresses for your bridesmaids which will make them feel beautiful, while also helping to make your wedding how you have envisioned it.
