Car of the Day - Ferrari 250 GT Tour d'France - 1321 GT

Ferrari had come a long way by the end of the 1950’s. From the 166 Berlinetta to this, the 1959 Le Mans GT winning 250 GT Tour d’France. During that decade there were probably more unique bodies built on Ferraris than at any other time. This was essentially because they were all hand built with very small production runs during a frantic period of development of both road cars and race cars for all major series.

The 1959 TdF marks a transition point between the early cars and the more “series” production runs that were to be introduced with the 250GT SWB. Of course there was the 250 GT Interim, but it itself showed the way the future was going. The TdF was built between 1955 and 1959 with three primary versions produced. These were distinguishable by the louvre count on the c-pillar Starting in 1955 with the 14 louvre type then progressing two three and finally the later cars with just one.

Serial number 1321 GT as featured here is one of the later single louvre examples. It was driven to 1st in GT Class and 3rd overall in the 1959 Le Mans 24 hr by Jean Blaton and Leon Dernier. It also won the Nurburgring 1000km.

1321 has been with the same owner since the 1970s and has not been seen in public since the early 1990s at Road America.

It is now offered for sale at the
