The Common Causes Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Article by Ken Miles

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a disease wherein the median nerve is compressed that will cause sharp pain, numbness and tingling sensation on your hand and sometimes, up in the arms. There are three main causes of carpal tunnel syndrome and those are biological causes, working conditions and medical problems. The carpal tunnel is a passageway in the wrist through which nerves and the flexor tendons of the fingers pass.

Jobs that involve high force or vibration and repetitive hand movements are the common causes of CTS. Examples of groups of people having these jobs are cleaners, musicians, operators, secretaries, sewers, etc. Because of repetitive motion and force generated, it will generally cause swelling of membranes in the carpal tunnel, thus compressing the median nerve. There is only little evidence that typists are high risk, but it is known that they get a different kind of hand pain.

Pregnant women usually experience hormonal changes and fluid retention and this will cause edema of the entire body, thus lessening the space of the carpal tunnel where the median nerve is located although the symptoms will subside after giving birth. Pregnant women should be very cautious in choosing the right treatment or medications to use and must consult an expert for this.

Diabetic people are also likely to have this disease. One of the complications of diabetes is diabetic neuropathy, in which the nerve function and sensation is affected. Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and hypothyroidism are some of the autoimmune disease that may also lead to having the condition.

If you have experienced or have injuries or trauma on the hand or wrist, arthritis and gout, you may possibly have this disease. Beta 2-microglobulin build up in hands are likely to be experienced by those who have chronic kidney insufficiency and this could put pressure or compression of the median nerve. Conditions like Down Syndrome, Amyloidosis, Acromegaly and tumor on the median nerve are also included in the medical factors.

Interleukin-2 which is a medication for the immune system and warfarin which is an anti-clotting drug, are medications that could cause this disease. It could also be passed on genetically. Children who developed the condition most likely got it because of the genetic factor. Smoking and drinking reduce blood supply in the extremities which can also contribute in developing this condition. Women are more likely to have it than men.

Experts should be contacted immediately at the first sign of the symptoms to be able to treat the disease and prevent further damage on the nerve. You could avoid having carpal tunnel syndrome as long as you know the risks factors of carpal tunnel syndrome. Seeking a physical therapist is also a big help in regaining the strength and normal function of your hand or wrist.
