"I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and not giving a f**k, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it."
Surprising? It shouldn't be. The pop world's favorite dumpster diver was raised by a singer-songwriter mother in Nashville, where she and her older brother started a punk band before she fled for Los Angeles. Sure, she's produced some of the most danceable radio hits of the past couple years, but she takes inspiration from a lot of different genres. Here are some Ke$ha-approved tracks.
Spank Rock's "DTF DADT" Ke$ha loves dirty mouths. These days, she's digging the profanities spewing from hip-hop's Spank Rock, who released his second full-length studio album Everthing Is Boring and Everyone Is a F**king Liar on September 27.
Ke$ha tweeted, "SPANK ROCK new ALBUM out!!!! OBSESSED. trust me. its so f***king good. get it. he's an angel with a dirty mouth."
Fugazi's "Waiting Room" Given the amount of autotune featured on Ke$ha's singles, it might be hard to believe that she actually grew up listening to any post-hardcore music. But Ke$ha credits her older brother with introducing her to '90s staples like Fugazi, Dinosaur Jr. and the Beastie Boys.
The Flaming Lips' "Free Radicals" In 2010, Ke$ha told Rolling Stone she hoped her next record would emulate the likes of the Arcade Fire and The Flaming Lips.
When told of Ke$ha's admiration, the Lips' lead Wayne Coyle told an interviewer he'd try to get her number for a future collaboration. Shortly thereafter, Ke$ha tweeted, "the flaming f**king lips?? call me."
