Cam Newton picking up Carolina Panthers offense quickly

Cam Newton, the 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick, has learned about 90 percent of the Carolina Panthers playbook through his work with former Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke, according to The Charlotte Observer.

When the NFL lockout was briefly lifted by a court ruling, Newton received a copy of Carolina’s playbook. During workouts in Florida, Weinke progressively installed 90 percent of it.

According to the Observer, Newton’s workouts are precise. Weinke gives Newton a play call, using the verbatim Panthers’ terminology. Newton then repeats the play and claps his hands, simulating a huddle break.

Then, Newton calls out the play at the line of scrimmage, drops back and throws. Giants wide receiver Michael Clayton, Browns tight Alex Smith, Lions wide receiver Titus Young and a handful of college receivers are running the routes, according to the Observer.

Weinke told the newspaper he has made some minor tweaks with Newton’s delivery and mechanics and is impressed with his work ethic.

“He wants to be great,” Weinke said.
