Christie Kane -- Woman quits smoking, wins contest

Christy Kane with BC Lung Association Director of QuitNow Services Jack Boomer.
Christy Kane had been a smoker for 21 years when she put down the cancer sticks in order to win the British Columbia Lung Association’s Quit Now and WIN contest.

Now she's breathing easier and spending easier too, with the $2500 in gift certificates she received as one of the five winners.

The Times Colonist had more details on the woman:

Victoria’s Christie Kane, 37, butted out after 21 years of smoking to win the B.C. Lung Association’s Quit Now and WIN contest.

Kane is one of five regional winners, one for each health authority in the province, to take home $2500 in gift certificates.

“Many people in my community are smokers and I’ve been smoking since I was 16 years old,” Kane said in a press release. She is a member of the Sooke First Nation. “I was ready to quit and the contest was just the extra incentive I needed. I can't believe I won. I think I’m going to buy a computer with my prize certificate.”

The Grand prize winner, Justin Tournier of Kimberly, won $2,500 in cash and $7,500 in gift certificates.

The contest ran from Jan. 6 to Feb. 2 - during which participants pledged online to quit smoking and had to verify their tobacco-free status with a urine sample and carbon monoxide test at the end of the time period.
