Barbaro to be first horse buried at Churchill Downs

You probably have a story about how much heart your horse has. But the whole world was captured by the story of Barbaro, the gallant thoroughbred who won the 132nd Kentucky Derby by an astounding 6 ½ lengths, and then lost his Triple Crown bid—and his life--to a fatal injury he sustained during the Preakness.

Yesterday, on the one year anniversary of his death, Barbaro’s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, announced that his ashes will be buried at Churchill Downs, where Barbaro made his mark on the racing world. A bronze memorial statue will also be erected at the site where Barbaro’s cremated ashes will be laid.

Four Kentucky Derby winners are buried at the nearby Kentucky Derby Museum. But Barbaro is the only horse ever to be buried on the grounds of the Churchill Downs, one of the most famous racetracks in the world.
