The sun illuminates gravestones in a cemetery near Bath on October 9 2008 in Somerset, England. English Heritage claims the UK has the world's best graveyard heritage, but warns that as gravestones deteriorate through weathering and vandalism so does social history. While English Heritage hopes renewed public interest in genealogy will improve conservation efforts in cemeteries, a conference starting today will discuss how best to tackle what is described as a crisis in the maintenance of graveyards. Everyone has their own idea of what's scary. Some people like gore, others like classic horror and then there are those that just frighten easy.
This is a list for those that want to sit down, watch a movie and be seriously distrubed. Don't be surprised if after watching these films you find yourself having trouble sleeping at night, scared to go outside, or seriously wondering what that weird noise actually is.
10. The Ring The Ring is pretty much only scary the first time you see it, not because it's not that scary but because the twists, surprises and realizations in the film scare the crap out of you the first time, but aren't as effective afterwards. Still, the idea of a videotape having the power to kill you is just creepy..
9. Se7en Se7en brings the seven deadliest sins to real life in horrifying ways. A deranged serial killer believes he is the sword of God, and he punishes seven sinners in seriously grotesque ways.
8. Dawn of the Dead (Original) The sequel to Night of the Living Dead, follows a group of people who take refuge from human flesh hungry beasts in an abandoned shopping mall. The zombies are fast, hungry and they have no remorse. This is the ultimate zombie film. FYI: This movie was recently re-made and although the original is a must see (because of improvements in technology and graphics) the new version is so much scarier.
7. Event Horizon A space ship that disappeared into a black hole seven years ago has now returned and it brought something evil back with it. A rescue mission is deployed to investigate the ship and bring back survivors, if there are any.
6. Children of the Corn A young couple is lost in the middle of nowhere when they stumble upon a town that seems deserted. Little do they know the town has been taken over by a cult of children that can only be called evil. You'll never look at a cornfield the same way again.
5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original) This film is very very loosely based on the story of serial killer Ed Gein, and it's somehow more disturbing than anything that could have ever really taken place. Five friends traveling to see their grandfather's grave end up tortured by a family that can only be described as seriously messed up. FYI: This film was also recenty re-made, don't waste time with the new version it's no good. Although it looks better, and sure, Jessica Biel is in it, the story line is totally different and it's just not as disturbing.
4. Pet Semetary A man with a string of bad luck only wants to put his family together again with the help of an old indian burial ground. When things that should be dead start coming back evil, a man realizes that he's unleashed far more than he can handle.
3. 28 Days Later A virus has infected a population and is spreading quicker than anyone could have ever imagined. When the virus can't be contained, the only chance of escape is to hide. That's easier said than done, especially when the virus has spread a type of rage, causing anyone infected to search for blood.
2. Saw Yes, there are five Saw movies now, not all of them winners. Still it can't be denied that the first Saw is genuinely frightening and that it's added a whole new disturbing twist to the classic horror film. The serial killer Jigsaw makes his victims choose between an unimaginable and sickening task, or dying in horrific ways.
1. The Exorcist The Exorcist may be old, but it will always be a classic. The idea of a an evil spirit inhabiting an innocent young girl is distrubing, but what's truly haunting is the transformation of Linda Blair's character Regan. Plus, it's impossible to get the image of a possessed Regan climbing down a set of stairs upside down, her body contorting in unimaginable ways.
