Hurray! Coleen gave birth to a healthy baby boy yesterday afternoon in Liverpool’s Women’s Hospital. Coleen and Wayne have named the baby Kai Wayne Rooney which was chosen by Coleen.

Baby Kai was nine days overdue and weighed 8lbs 2oz. A spokesman for the Rooneys said: “Mother and baby are both absolutely fine. Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life.”

Wayne, 24, beamed with joy as he got his first glimpse of his tiny son, who was born at 2.20pm.

He missed training with his Manchester United team-mates to be at the hospital and is likely to be excused playing in the Red Devils’ Champions League game against CSKA Moscow tonight.

Wayne’s grandmother, Pat, who has 17 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, said Coleen chose the Liverpool hospital because she wanted a “Scouse son”.

She said: “We’re all over the moon. Wayne and his mum Jeanette popped round earlier today to give me the news.

“Wayne was there for the birth and he must have had an anxious wait as Coleen went into hospital the day before. But the first baby is always a long time.

“They were expecting a boy – and we’re hoping he’ll turn into a little Wayne. He could be a little footballer in the making.

“Hopefully he’ll play for Everton one day – but Sir Alex Ferguson might try and sign him for Manchester United.”

Both Wayne and Coleen’s parents were at the hospital yesterday. Wayne’s brother Graham, 21, arrived with blue balloons bearing the message: “Your New Baby Boy.”

Graham’s girlfriend Carly Gardiner, 19, accompanied him carrying a huge bunch of flowers.

Last night a source close to the couple said: “They can’t wait to get home with Kai. They’re nervous and excited at the same time – and can’t stop smiling.

“They want Kai to have as normal an upbringing as possible. We fully expect little Kai to be just the start of a big family for them – and they’ll make great parents.”
